Unilever to Allocate 100 million Euros to become Part of 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan

Paul Polman, CEO of Unilever, has said that the FMCG giant has decided to become a partner of Clean India Movement, pet project of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He announced allocation of funds to the tune of 100 million euros (equivalent to more than Rs 700 crore) by 2019 or 2020 through its Indian arm Hindustan Unilever Ltd. While elaborating the plan Paul briefed media that his company has been successful in reaching 65 million people with their campaign on hand washing. They now want to reach 200 to 300 million people. HUL is also interested in becoming parts of ‘Make in India’ and Smart-City initiatives.

Home Secretary Removed after his Intervention in Matang Sinh's Arrest by CBI

Anil Goswami, home secretary, has been removed unceremoniously after he tried to stall arrest of Matang Singh, Congress leader from Assam and businessman, by interfering with CBI investigations. He has been replaced by secretary of ex-rural development ministry, LC Goyal. It is reported that Anil Goswami yesterday tried to interfere with Matang Sinh’s arrest by calling CBI, which he later confessed to Home Minister Rajnath Singh. After a briefing from Home Minister to PM, followed by a meeting with officials, Anil Goswami was sacked, much ahead of his 2-year tenure comes to an end.

First US Cabinet Level Visit to India after Obama's India-visit in January

Strategic partnership between India and the US. is heading towards the next level as Jacob L Lew, US Treasury Secretary, is all set to visit two cities in India (Mumbai and Delhi) for participating in the meeting for US-India Economic and Financial Partnership next week. On February 11, he will first meet RBI Governor followed by financial/business leaders of India in Mumbai. 5th US—India Economic and Financial Partnership meeting will take place on February 12, which will be co-chaired by US Treasury Secretary and Arun Jaitley (Indian Finance Minister).

India Ranks Second Last in International IP Index

The third annual International IP Index, released by Global Intellectual Property Center of U.S. Chamber of Commerce, shows India at bottom of the list. While the USA tops the ‘UP: Unlimited Potential’ list, India is the second last name in the list. Current edition of the index has been prepared after studying thirty measurable criteria of thirty leading economies of the world, representing around 80 per cent of world’s total GDP. Some of the main criteria that were measured by the Index include factors such as engagement in international treaties, enforcement, copyright and trademark protections, patents, and others.

RBI Governor in Favour of Raising Tax Exemption Limit and Continuing War on Inflation

Raghuram Rajan, having love-hate relationship with Finance Ministry and India inc., has said during an interview that the apex bank is continuing its war on restraining inflation. He stressed on the fact that India will be able to win the war against inflation when the country becomes capable of sustaining supply shocks in the future. While talking to an analyst, RBI Governor has opined in favour of raising tax exemption limit from the existing Rs 1.5 lakh per year because he feels the limit was stuck at Rs. 1 lakh per year for considerable time period.    

Delhi Election Campaign ends Today with Increased Poll Pitch and Unexpected Supports

With Delhi Assembly election campaign coming to an end today, all political parties increase their poll pitch. BJP is organising 70 road-shows across Delhi, touching every assembly constituency. Amit Shah, National President of BJP has hit out at its arch rival Aam Aadmi Party on the ongoing AAP donation row. However, AAP got unexpected support from Janata Dal (United) leaders Nitish Kumar and Sharad Yadav. Punjab unit of Aam Aadmi Party is also campaigning in Delhi for all its party candidates. Left has asked its cadres to vote for AAP candidates in the 55 seats where they have not fielded candidates.   

Saurav Ganguly Optimistic About India's Performance in World Cup

During a book launch programme in Kolkata, one of the most successful Indian Cricket skippers, Saurav Ganguly said that the current Indian team is a serious contender for the World Cup title, which is scheduled to start on February 14. He also hailed current skipper M S Dhoni as he believes Dhoni plays his best under pressure. Saurav told media that he is particularly interested to see how Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers (Captain of South Africa), and Steve Smith of Australia perform in the World Cup.

Congress Gaining Lost Ground in Rajasthan

Outcome of local body polls in Rajasthan shows that Indian National Congress is slowly but steadily gaining lost ground in the state. It is learnt that out of 6,236 seats, BJP has won 114 seats, closely followed by 75 seats by INC. Per State Election Commission’s report, independent candidates have won in 24 Panchayat Samiti seats. Out of 1,014 Zila Parishad wards, BJ|P leads the tally by winning 17 seats, closely followed by INC’s 11 seats. Counting of votes started today at 8am across 33 district head quarters of Rajasthan.

Pre-poll Surveys Predict Mixed Bag

As campaign for Delhi Assembly election draws to an end, pre-poll surveys put everyone guessing. While most pre-poll surveys predicted formation of Aam Aadmi Party-led government, some surveys predicted a BJP win. While surveys done by ABP-Nelson, HT-C fore, and AajTak-Cicero predicted AAP to become the single largest party, surveys done by The Week-IMRB and IndiaTV-C Voter predict a BJP win. No matter what surveys say, both AAP and BJP leaders vouched for their respective wins.   

Amazon Setting Up Warehouse in Hyderabad

Amazon, online retail behemoth, is all set to open its warehouse center in Hyderabad. Per the plan revealed by John Schoettler (global director and Real Estate and Facilities’ head of Amazon), after meeting K T Rama Rao (IT Minister of Telangana), the online retail giant will start operating in the coming 2 months from a leased premise. They will operate from their own premise once the facility construction gets completed. The minister has assured Amazon of all incentive helps, according to new industrial policy of Telangana.

Supreme Court Delivers Landmark Judgement to End Criminalisation of Politics

Apex court of India today delivered a landmark judgement by ruling that suppression of pending criminal cases (especially serious offences related to moral turpitude and corruption) by any elected representative can lead to disqualification from elected position. This landmark judgement was delivered by a bench of two judges, headed by Justice Dipak Misra. Misra also observed that this judgement will pave the way for eradicating criminalisation of politics.

Saradha Scam Accused Srinjoy Bose Resigns from TMC and Rajya Sabha

Srinjoy Bose, Rajya Sabha MP on TMC ticket, who yesterday got conditional bail from Alipore court due to ‘human error’, has today resigned from Rajya Sabha as well as from his primary membership of the party. While answering to media questions, Srinjoy Bose yesterday said that politics is not his cup of tea. However, Derek O'Brien, TMC leader and spokesperson, accused central BJP leadership for creating pressure on Srinjoy. Many political analysts believe that Srinjoy’s resignation is the first sign that TMC is falling apart as CBI nears the main accused in Saradha scam.
