Apex Court Orders Release of Undertrials having served majority of Punishment Period

The Supreme Court has ordered release of all the undertrials who have spent more than half of the maximum punishment period. The SC has also asked the district judges categorically to identify such undertrials by visiting respective district jails once in a week for two months. The Centre has been directed by the apex court for creating a roadmap to fast-track criminal justice delivery system.    

Home Minister asks J&K CM to identify Land for Rehabilitation of Kashmiri Pandits

Home Minister Rajnath Singh has asked Omar Abdullah, Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister, to identify land for bringing back Kashmiri Pandits and rehabilitate them in the Valley. Bringing back Kashmiri Pandits with dignity was one of major poll manifesto promises made by the BJP. Political analysts believe that the successful rehabilitation of Kashmiri migrants will help the BJP in making its presence felt in J&K.  

Australian PM gets Ceremonial Reception at Rashtrapati Bhavan

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott is on an India visit. Indian PM Narendra Modi received him through a ceremonial reception at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi. This ceremonial reception was given before the two PMs met for an important meeting. After landing from his flight in Mumbai on September 4, 2014,Abbot was received by Piyush Goyal, Minister of State (Independent charge) for Power, Coal and New and Renewable Energy.

Sania Mirza and her Parner out of US Open Women's Doubles Semifinals

Sania-Cara partnership came to a halt at the US Open women's doubles semifinals when the Indian-Zimbabwean partners lost in straight sets to Swiss-Italian partners Martina Hingis-Flavia Pennetta. Hingis- Pennetta won comfortably in one hour and 10 minutes by 6-2, 6-4.

Motorola on a Launching Spree

Motorola is on a launching spree in India. It announced the launch of its much awaited Android-based smartwatch – Moto 360 – in India. This wearable device not only runs for an entire day on single charge but also supports wireless charging. It wll be available through Flipkart at Rs 12,999. Motorola has also announced the launch of 2nd generation Moto G as well as Moto X in India.

Government drops Rs 15-crore Threshold for Transaction

The Government of India, in a move to woo more foreign investment and create more conducive environment for foreign companies, has done away with the Rs 15-crore threshold of transaction between a multinational entity and its Indian subsidiary, for mandatory tax department scrutiny. Central Board of Direct Taxes or CBDT has issued a new guideline on manually selecting cases for mandatory I-T scrutiny, which has no mention of the 15-crore threshold. The government may adopt a risk-based approach for identifying international transactions that are prone to tax evasion.

UNICEF report on Sexual Violence in India on Teenage Girls

A report published by UNICEF claimed that 77 per cent of teenaged girls in the age group of 15-19 years in India face sexual violence at the hands of their spouses or partners. Girls in the same age group also face physical abuse from their parents. .

Perjury Application Filed by CBI in Aircel-Maxis case

After allegations were filed against the Central Bureau of Investigation of interfering with the probe in Aircel-Maxis case, the investigating agency has filed a perjury application. Charges were leveled against Ranjit Sinha, CBI Chief, by senior lawyer Prashant Bhushan for trying to give clean chit to Dayanidhi Maran, former Union minister, and Kalanidhi Maran in the Aircel-Maxis case.

Government Hikes DA by 7 per cent; Takes Steps Towards Formation of Green Regulator

Government has increased DA of central government employees by 7 per cent. All Central government employees who are entitled for additional dearness allowance installment with effect from July 1, 2014 will receive the enhanced DA with arrears soon.  

In addition, the Government has constituted a four-member panel that will recommend to set set up an environment regulator.  

J&K Flood Situation Worsens

Flood situation in Kashmir valley worsened as  the River Jhelum flowed above the danger level. To assist rescue and relief efforts, the adminstration has called in Army as well as NDRF teams. The death toll has reached 20 and the administration  fears that 45 more have also died. South Kashmir is the worst affected area. This area includes Kulgam, Anantnag, and Pulwama districts. The only South Kashmir district still not flooded is Shopian but there too the water level in Rambiara stream is rising fast.

Nithari Killer to be Hanged on September 12

Surinder Koli, the notorious Nithari killer, will be hanged till death on September 12, 2014 . Jail Superintendent S H M Rizvi of Meerut Jail announced that while hanging the heinous killer all the procedures as well as rules will be followed. Atul Kumar Gupta, Additional sessions Judge of Ghaziabad, issued a warrant on September 4, 2014 in the name of the 42-year-old culprit.

Not so Good Day for Nifty and Sensex

Nifty traded below the 8100 points, the crucial psychological level in trade. The stocks that pulled NSE down are United Spirits, BPCL, HDFC, BHEL, and Coal India. BSE Sensex followed the same trend and lost more than 100 points and traded below 27k. BSE’s plunge was led by stocks such as FMCG, metal, power, and healthcare.
