07 August 2012 Current Events Ansari to be Vice-President for the second time
UPA candidate Hamid Ansari won comfortably in the vice-presidential election on Tuesday, August 7. He defeated NDA nominee Jaswant Singh by 238 votes. The result was announced by Lok Sabha Secretary General T.K. Viswanathan, the returning officer for the poll. Ansari got 490 first preference votes out of 728 valid votes cast while Jaswant Singh polled 238 votes. Out of the 787 members who were eligible to vote from the two houses, 736 exercised their franchise while 8 votes were found invalid. Ansari would have required 365 votes to be declared elected. 

India has asked US to ensure safety of Indians: Krishna

External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna has said the US should give assurance to the Indian community about their safety in the country. This statement came after six Sikhs were killed in a gurdwara shootout. Krishna also asked Washington to beef up security at all places of worship. He stated that in this matter the US government is "fully in line with the thinking of the Indian government". He also said that the US government has been asked to thoroughly investigate into the incident. Krishna met a delegation of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), the apex body of Sikhs in Delhi on Tuesday, August 7.


Lufthansa introduces new jet service with an eye to increase India market share

 Lufthansa with an aim to increase the market share in outbound travel segment in India has launched its services on a new Boeing 747-8 intercontinental jet from Frankfurt to Delhi. The national capital is the first Asian destination which will get services on Boeing 747-8. The new aircraft will replace the old B747-400 which runs the airlines' daily direct flight between Delhi-Frankfurt. There are 362 seats including eight first class, 92 business class and 262 economy class seats in the new aircraft. 


Uninor in discussion with competitors to absorb employees
Telecom operator Uninor which is a joint venture of Norwegian firm Telenor and the Unitech Group, stated that it is in discussion with business competitors to absorb its employees. Uninor decided to scale down operations in 4 circles that is Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Orissa. The employees who would be retrenched in this process, the company is looking into the possibilities of them being absorbed by its competitors. As per the company the other companies have shown interest in the same. Uninor intends to focus on its best performing circles like Uttar Pradesh-East, Uttar Pradesh-West, Bihar and Jharkhand, West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh. This is in way of preparation to strengthen its finance and operations for the upcoming 2G spectrum auction. 
 

India beats Sri Lanka by 39 runs in only T20

In the lone T20 match India scripted a 39 runs win over Sri Lanka even though it scored the lowest total in this format against Sri Lanka. India by batting first made 155 runs for the loss of three wickets while Sri Lanka was bundled up for 116 in 18 overs. Indian bowlers Irfan Pathan with three for 27 and Ashok Dinda with four for 19 struck through the batting line up of Sri Lanka. 

 


Rajesh Khanna's movies are popular online
Among the online users, Rajesh Khanna's classic movies "Aradhana" and "Haathi Mere Saathi" have topped the list in the month of July, when he died. The report was compiled by iStream.com which analyzed over 100,000 online views of 50 Rajesh Khanna movies on the website.

Kinect for Windows and SDK now available in India

Microsoft has made an announcement that Kinect for Windows along with the SDK is now available in India. With SDK new apps for the sensor can be developed. Kinect provides options for a number of features like improved skeletal tracking, face tracking, enhanced speech, seated mode tracking.
The cost is on a higher side though due to customs and other charges and it is priced at Rs. 19,990. The Xbox 360 version is cheaper than this but it does not allow you to develop new apps for it using the official SDK.
