Separate statehood agitations in Darjeeling and Assam

 

Separate statehood agitations had distinct features in two states of India. Darjeeling was trapped in the protests for Gorkhaland as this was the fifth day of agitation on Wednesday. 32 people that included 29 GJM activists got arrested based on the pending cases against them. The number of arrest after the agitations for Gorkhaland started again is now over 130. Supporters of Gorkha Janmukti Morcha did not let West Bengal Home Secretary Basudeb Banerjee to move and he was forced to walk from the Darjeeling SP's office to the DM's office. He is here to furnish a report to the CM Mamata Banerjee on the situation prevailing in Darjeeling.

On the other hand in Assam, curfew was relaxed from 6 am to 6 pm in violence ridden Karbi Anglong District as no cases of fresh violence occurred. In lower Assam three bandhs which had paralyzed the normal life for two days ended. Also in Hamreng police district, curfew relaxation occurred from 10 am to 4 pm.The All Bodo Students' Union shortened its 60-hour statewide bandh to 48 hours and the All Koch Rajbongshi Students' Union reduced its 36-hour shut down to 31 hours due to forthcoming Eid festival. Also the United Peoples' Democratic Forum called off its 1500-hour bandh with the possibility of NDFB leaders having discussions with the union government regarding their demands.

Antony's remarks on killing of Indian soldiers by Pakistani troops raises furore

 

Defence Minister A.K. Antony’s statement in the Parliament that some terrorists dressed as Pakistani soldiers got into Indian territory crossing the LOC at Poonch and killed Indian soldiers has raised a major controversy as the opposition saw this as a scope to give Pakistan a clean chit in the matter. This led to temporary adjournment of the Parliament. BJP has demanded for the PM’s statement in the matter. Antony stated he had relayed whatever information was there with him and would apprise the parliament as soon as he had the latest update. The government also stated that the Defence Minister won’t apologize as was demanded by the opposition.

On the other hand, top military officials of the two countries that is, the Directors General of Military Operations had a talk on the hotline to dissipate tensions along the LOC. Indian defence officials stated that Pakistani soldiers intruded and attacked an Indian post killing five Indian soldiers in the Poonch sector along the LOC while the Pakistan army stated that Indian soldiers attacked on a post that led to critical injury of two of their soldiers. The sixth Indian soldier who was injured in the attack is said to be in a critical condition.

RBI impose Rs 5.6 lakh fine on SBI

 

The RBI has imposed a fine of Rs 5.6 lakh on State Bank of India as it violated the agreement pertaining to the operation and maintenance of currency chests at the Secunderabad branch of SBI. The RBI had earlier imposed a fine of Rs 3 crore on SBI last month for the violation of the KYC norms. In fact a number of banks have suffered penalties for violation of KYC norms as well as anti-money laundering rules. After delving deeply into the facts RBI had concluded that penal action in terms of money was needed. As per the media reports the banks had opened accounts without complying with the KYC norms and had converted black money into white based on fictitious PAN cards.

Supreme Court rejects BCCI's plea on stay on Bombay High Court order

 

The apex court has refused to give stay to the Bombay High Court’s order to BCCI which termed the two member panel probing the spot fixing scandal as illegal as its constitution was not in sync and violated the BCCI’s operational rules. The Bombay High Court had also dismissed Srinivisan's petition seeking for a stay on its order so that he can be allowed to move a higher court in appeal. The Supreme Court on the other hand has agreed to hear the BCCI’s plea and 29th August has been fixed as the next day for hearing.

Krrish 3 trailer has caught the fancy of the viewers and has reached the 3 million views on Youtube since it was released on Monday, August 5. Hrithik Roshan’s superhero portrayal in the movie is set to win hearts. This has Priyanka Chopra, Vivek Oberoi and Kangana Ranaut as well. There were a million views on Tuesday morning. The promo seems straight out of Hollywood studios. Hrithik will be seen as Rohit and Krrish in the movie which will hit theaters on Diwali. Rakesh Roshan has produced and directed the movie.
