Human sacrifice in Assam, 11 held for the crime

A 55-year-old man was tortured and killed as a human sacrifice in a remote village Barak Valley of Assam. In this connection 11 people including three women have been arrested but they are yet to be interrogated about it.

It was said that one of the villagers had a dream where supposedly he saw the Goddess who told him that the man was possessed by an evil spirit and if he was not killed then there would be severe repercussions on the entire village.

The man was tied to a tree, tortured and then he succumbed to his injuries. His body was buried and everyone was told that the police should not be informed. When the police arrived in the village they had to lathi charge the mob. Witch hunting is still prevalent in some communities in Assam.

Himachal bus accident: 18 dead

18 people lost their lives and 18 were injured when a private bus carrying passengers plunged into a gorge of 500 feet depth in Sirmaur district of Himachal Pradesh.

The Superintendent of Police Sumedha Diwedi informed that they were able to recover 18 bodies. There were 35 passengers at least in the bus when the accident happened.

The injured have been hospitalized in Rajgarh and Solan.The bus was traveling from Punardhar to Solan when the accident happened near Bharari village.

Sirmaur is a secluded district in the state where a lesser number of buses ply so people overcrowd those available. This may have been the reason for the bus toppling into the gorge.

Rupee now at 57.06 against the dollar

The rupee has been heading towards a record level low which it touched last year in June 2012 when it was 57.32.

On Friday, it touched 57.06 to the dollar at 1:39 pm. It ended at 56.84/85 on Thursday. The sudden plunge is said to be because of excessive dollar buying by some foreign banks.

The depreciation was around 6% against the dollar from the beginning of May. This is due to the fact that there is eagerness to buy dollars with the U.S. economy making it evident of a revival in growth. Then the huge current-account deficit have added to the rupee’s fall.

Dhoni at 16th position in Forbes List of highest paid athletes

M.S. Dhoni is now at 16th position jumping 15 places from his 31st in 2012 in the Forbes list of highest-paid athletes.

The fact that he led India to a win in Twenty20 World Cup and then went on to a victory in the World Cup coupled with endorsements has resulted in earnings of $31.5 million.

Tiger Woods tops the list with $78.1 million. Tennis star Roger Federer is at second place with $71.5 million earnings. Apart from Dhoni, the other Indian to make in the top 100 is Sachin Tendulkar who got 51st rank with an estimated earnings of $22 million.

Saina Nehwal out of Thailand Open

Saina Nehal, the world number two crashed in the Thailand Open, thus losing hope of retaining her Thailand Grand Prix Gold title. In a stunning defeat of 21-13 12-21 18-21, she lost to world number 23 Juan Gu of Singapore in the quarterfinals at Bangkok.

After six matches, this was Saina’s first defeat. In the Thailand Open, Saina was the top seed and she had slammed Indonesia's Febby Angguni 21-12 21-11 in just 30 minutes or so.

Akshay Kumar hiked his fee for endorsements

Akshay Kumar, who is supposed to endorse 13 brands, has hiked his fee and has also stated that it is a give-and-take relationship, so he found nothing wrong increasing the price for such endorsements.

He also specified that when the market for something is good then there was no reason why the rates should not be increased. He was at the event of launching a new range of Eveready batteries.

He was selected as a brand ambassador in 2011 for which Amitabh Bachchan was the ambassador for two years. Akshay will be next seen in Once Upon A Time In Mumbai Again which releases on August 8.

Update for Samsung Galaxy S4

Samsung has released an update to fix some of the issues which the Galaxy S4 faces. For instance, the users face an issue of internal storage where they can avail only 8.82 GB in the 16 GB variant.

With this update the users can move the apps to the memory card as well and have 9.23 GB at their disposal. The update will also include camera firmware which will enable recording of HDR videos. This would also tackle the smudge issue which happens with air gesture. New icons in the status menu, enhanced legibility in the display, Smart Pause toggle are the features which will be there in the update. The size limit of this update will be 365.6 mb.
