Change in Italian marines' case

Two Italian marines who were accused of killing two Kerala fishermen would not be tried under a maritime security law (Safety of Maritime Navigation Act (SUA)) which carried a death penalty. The Union Home Ministry had issued an order on Friday and directed the National Investigation Agency, India’s anti- terrorism body not to run trial under a maritime security law. The Italian marines will now be prosecuted under Section 3(1) (a) of the Suppression of Unlawful Acts. This does not carry a death penalty but carries a maximum sentence of 10 years. The marines, Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone, were guarding the Italian cargo ship when they mistook the fishermen for pirate and opened fire leading to the death of fishermen. Italy stated that as the firing took place in international water so the marines should not be tried in India but India is not giving its consent on the same. The case had also led a diplomatic dispute last March when Government of Italy demanded the marines to visit Italy to vote in the national election. They were allowed to go by the Supreme Court. Government of Italy even asked the Supreme Court to drop the case because of unnecessary delay. There is a possibility that the government might inform the Supreme Court on Monday regarding its decision on the case. Attorney General GE Vahanvati had several discussions with officials from different ministries and also from the National Investigation Agency regarding the case.

The price of CNG (compressed natural gas) has been reduced by the Indraprastha Gas Ltd (IGL) by Rs 14.90 per kg. Indraprastha Gas Ltd sells CNG in Delhi and NCR (National Capital Region). The price has come down to Rs 35.20 per kg from Rs 50.10 per kg but there is a doubt whether it will be accompanied by any reduction in the fare charges or not. The reduction is applicable to both the consumption slabs. On the other hand there is an increase in the quantity of the slabs by 20%. In lower slab for consuming PNG up to 36 standard cubic metres (which earlier was 30 units) in two months the price has been reduced to Rs 24.50 a unit from Rs 29.50 per unit w.e.f. February 8, 2014. It is the first reduction in the price within the period of last six years. CNG and PNG price in Noida, Greater Noida and Ghaziabad has also been reduced. But due to different tax structure the reduction in price is different from Delhi. CNG price has been reduced by Rs 16.5 per kg to Rs 40.15 per kg whereas PNG price has been reduced to Rs 26.20/scm from Rs 31/scm for consuming 36 scm in two months. For consuming beyond 36 scm in two months the new rate is Rs Rs 47.65/scm.
