Railway Budget stresses on technology

Soon, the country will have its first bullet train between Mumbai and Ahmedabad, as per a proposal contained in  the railway budget, presented by the Railway Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda.  He proposed to introduce 58 new trains, ultra modern facilities like digital reservation charts, wi-fi facility at particular stations and trains, wake up call for passengers, more money for cleanliness and safety, food courts at railway stations, and better connectivity in hilly areas and northeastern states of India. The four metros will have high-speed rail connectivity under the Diamond Quadrilateral project. Along with the hike in freight carriage charges and passenger fare, the Railway Minister has also proposed alternative ways to earn revenue.  He underlined that the Narendra Modi government is striving to make Indian Railways a profitable enterprise.

BrahMos supersonic cruise missile successfully test-fired

The BrahMos supersonic cruise missile has been successfully test-fired from defence base, the Integrated Test Range in Chandipur in Balasore district in Odisha. The missile developed jointly by India and Russia has a range of 290 km with the ability to carry a conventional weapon of up to 300 kg. The missile’s maximum speed is three times faster than the US subsonic Tomahawk cruise missile. Submarines, ships and aircraft can be used to launch the missile. As per BrahMos Aerospace spokesperson Praveen Pathak, it was the 44th launch of BrahMos.

Rahul Gandhi and Mamata Banerjee slam railway budget 2014-15

Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi has termed the railway budget for 2014-15 as hopeless. As per media reports. Rahul Gandhi added that in the Rs 164,374 crore budget, the Congress-ruled states have been neglected and not given their dues. At the same time, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee blamed the central government for overlooking West Bengal in the railway budget. Banerjee on her official Facebook page said that the new government has ignored and humiliated West Bengal in the railway budget.

Congress supporters protest outside the Railway Minister's residence

Congress supporters, including women, protested against the rail fare hike outside the residence of Railway Minister Sadananda Gowda at Tughlaq Road in New Delhi. Gowda’s vehicle was stopped outside his home by the protestors. In an ugly turn of the event, the name plate of the minister was also removed and stamped by Congress leader Mukesh Sharma. But Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president Arvinder Singh Lovely expressed regret over the incident, and said the Congress believes in  peaceful protests. .

Punjab seeks Andhra's help to promote fish farming

In a letter to Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has sought his help in promoting fish farming in the state. He has requested him to appoint a team of specialists to visit Punjab for their valuable advice on fish hatcheries, fish rearing and post-harvest technology. The Punjab government has recently started a first project in order to develop a modern fish farm covering an area of more than 600 acres. All prospective fish farmers in Punjab can look at this project as a model and a demonstrative farm.  After Green Revolution, the Punjab Government wants the farmers to opt for dairy farming and fish farming as a method to diversify.

Yuvraj to raise funds through charity auction for cancer

Indian batsman Yuvraj Singh after his brilliant performance at the bicentenary match at Lord's is all set to hold a charity auction on July 14 to raise funds for YOUWECAN, an initiative of Yuvraj Singh Foundation. The organisation is working with an objective to create awareness for early detection and prevention of cancer. Apart from this, it will also provide the required support to fight the disease. The auction will have T-shirt of Sachin Tendulkar from his 200th Test match, the 2011 World cup-winning medal, an opportunity to have a dinner date with Yuvraj and a special practice session with Yuvraj. The event will be attended by many popular cricketers like Virat Kohli, Tendulkar, Kevin Pietersen, Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly.
