US honours "Nirbhaya - brave heart, fearless"

Nirbhaya, the Delhi gang rape victim, received a US "woman of courage" award posthumously for "inspiring people to work together to end violence against women in India and around the world."US first lady Michelle Obama along with the Secretary of State John Kerry heaped praises on Nirbhaya for her determination and courage at the State Department presentation ceremony on Friday on International Women's Day. Kerry said she was the inspiration for millions of women and men together. He stated that, "Nirbhaya's fight survives her for inspiring people to work together to end violence against women in India and around the world by displaying immense courage in demanding justice." A moment of silence was observed after the citation was read. A part of a statement from Nirbhaya's mother and father was also read where they had said, "We never imagined that the girl we thought was our daughter would one day be the daughter of the entire world. She was meant to be the daughter of the world. This is a huge achievement in itself." Eight other women were give the annual award as a recognition of the exceptional courage and leadership shown in advocating for women's rights and empowerment even sometimes putting themselves at risk.

Trinamool leader remanded to CID custody

The Trinamool Congress leader Mohammad Iqbal, who is the prime accused in the murder of a police officer in Kolkata on Feb 12 and has been arrested was on Saturday remanded to CID custody till March 20 by a city court. Ashok Mukherjee who sought for his bail stated that Iqbal’s name was not there in the FIR and that he had no motive to kill the police officer.The prosecution asked for 14 days of CID custody. The court of chief judicial magistrate (Alipore) sent Iqbal to custody till March 20. Amid all this tension brewed in the court complex as more than 200 supporters of Iqbal shouted slogans and demonstrated as the Trinamool Congress leader was brought to the court. Rapid Action Force was brought to control the demonstrators after they blocked the vehicle in which Iqbal was being escorted out of the court after the hearing. Iqbal's daughter Saba stated her father was a victim of political conspiracy weaved by the opposition.

India's longest elevated road at Mumbai

India's longest elevated road will be completed in May in Mumbai. The construction for the first phase of the 9.29 km long Eastern Freeway Project (EFP) finished on Saturday. The EFP which is 16.40 km long is being built under the aegis of Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and is one of the showpiece infrastructure projects of Mumbai. For the completion of the project, 2000 workers,100 engineers have worked for the past few years. As many as 1.60 million bags of cement, 32,000 tonnes steel, 3,346 girders and 2,600 km long high tension steel wires were required to build the first part of the EFP. The first part of the EFP will be a blessing for the northeast-south traffic movement in Mumbai, which passes through some of the most congested areas. It connects south Mumbai with the eastern suburbs and beyond to Thane, Raigad and other interior parts of the state from Orange Gate to Anik-Panrapole Link Road, and Anik-Panjrapole up to Ghatkopar comprising a road that encompasses 7.21 km. 12.10 km of the EFP is totally elevated, the remaining 4.30 km will have a 500-meter long twin tunnel - which again will be first in India's urban road network - and two flyovers at Vashi Naka and RCF Junction will be there.

Bopanna-Ram out of Indian Wells Masters in the first round

Rohan Bopanna and Rajeev Ram's campaign came to an end at the ATP Indian Wells Masters in the first round after they suffered a straight sets defeat against Lukas Kubot of Poland and Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia. The Indo-American pair though put up an enthusiastic fight before they lost 4-6 6-7 (4) in the opening round of the $5,030,408 hard court tournament. Mahesh Bhupathi and his Canadian partner Daniel Nestor, ranked third, will face Feliciano Lopez of Spain and Milos Raonic of Canada for their first round clash. Leander Paes and his Austrian partner Jurgen Melzer, seeded seventh, will meet Benoit Paire of Frace and Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka in their tournament-opener.

CNN-IBN Poll survey: NTR greatest actor

CNN-IBN conducted a poll survey in which Late Telugu actor and former Chief Minister Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao (NTR) was adjudged the greatest Indian actor of all time, while Sridevi was named the best actress. The survey was done in celebration of 100 years of Indian cinema. NTR got 53 percent of total votes, while actor-filmmaker Kamal Haasan received 44 percent of rest of the votes. Southern actors Rajkumar and Mohanlal got one percent votes each, and the rest of the actors got very less votes. Sridevi, who made a comeback with "English Vinglish", got 39 percent votes while Madhuri Dixit and Savithri finished second and third respectively with 16 and 12 percent votes. Aishwarya Rai, Saroja Devi, Madhubala and Smita Patil got eight, six, four and three percent votes, respectively. Mani Ratnam's Tamil action-drama "Nayagan", which had Kamal Haasan in the lead got 42 percent of votes to be named India's greatest film of all time, and Ramesh Sippy's "Sholay" was on the second position with 29 percent."Swayamvaram" got six percent votes, while "Mughal-e-Azam" and "Pather Panchali" had five percent votes respectively. Mani Ratnam was named India's greatest director of all time with 29 percent. Tamil director K. Balachander was on second position with 18 percent, while Satyajit Ray finished third with 14 percent and Tamil director S. Shankar got nine percent votes. Among music directors Illayaraja received 49 percent votes to be named India's greatest music composer. Oscar-winner A.R Rahman came at second spot with 29 percent. Singer-composer S.P Balasubramanyam was on third position with seven percent, while late R.D Burman received four percent votes.

The 1800 mAh battery is fairly large for this type of phone and but would offer only 4 hours of talktime on 2G network. The phone has an 8 megapixel autofocus rear camera and a 2 megapixel secondary camera. It also has 2.97GB onboard storage expandable to 32 GB via a micro SD card.
