Opposition jealous of development in Bengal: Mamata

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday flayed the opposition for spreading slander about her government despite the state's economic progress, saying they were jealous of her development initiatives. Launching the Parama Island Flyover, the state's longest, her first official function after her Bhutan tour, the Trinamool Congress chief also initiated projects for the New Town, on the north eastern fringes of Kolkata. "Despite all the development, the opposition is indulging in politics of slander and spreading negativity.... They are jealous of the progress we have ushered in. Police record statement in case against Kejriwal

A Delhi Police constable on Friday recorded his statement in a defamation case against Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal before a court here for using a derogatory term against the men in khaki. Metropolitan magistrate Anu Aggarwal recorded the statement of the complainant, Harvinder, a constable posted at Govindpuri police station in south Delhi. The court was hearing a complaint filed by Harvinder, who alleged that Kejriwal's usage of word 'thulla' had harmed his reputation in the eyes of the general public, including his family, relatives and friends. The complaint, filed by advocate L.N. Rao, claimed: "The 'thulla' remark made by a person of the stature of chief minister demoralised Delhi Police and it was intended to provoking breach of peace." UC Browser captures 50 percent market share

Alibaba-backed mobile browser, UC Browser, has said it has now captured over 50 percent market share in the country as of September 2015, according to data compiled by web traffic analysis tool Statcounter. "UC Browser has seen staggering success in the Indian market with market share rising 15 percent in the last 12 months helping the company gain over 50 percent market here," Kenny Ye, director of international business development division, UCWeB, said on Thursday. "As of today, one out of two mobile page views come from UC which is driven by UC's cloud-based browsing technology, power of data and cost saving and providing local content," Ye added. Coolpad to invest Rs.300 million for phone manufacturing

Chinese handset-maker Coolpad will invest over Rs.300 million in the country in manufacturing, research and development (R&D) and design as it launched a new smartphone -- Coolpad Note 3 -- priced at Rs.8,999 on Friday. The company also said it will partner with Videocon to manufacture smartphones in the country and will roll out nearly half a million devices from its facility in Maharashtra. "The first Made-in-India Coolpad phone will be available in the first quarter of 2016," Coolpad vice president Johnson Luo said. Coolpad, which produces nearly 34 million smartphones every year and has $three billion revenue, had earlier launched in India with the Dazen brand name which was a partnership between Coolpad and Chinese search engine Qihoo 360. Repolling underway in 11 booths in Bengal civic polls

Repolling was underway on Friday in 11 booths -- nine in Bidhannagar and two in the Asansol civic bodies -- in West Bengal amid heavy police presence. Repolling was on in nine booths, spread across four wards of the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation, and two booths of the Asansol Municipal Corporation. Till 11 a.m., the percentage of polling was 17 percent in Bidhannagar and 22 percent in Asansol, the state election commission said. The results for both the municipal corporations would be announced on October 10. (Source: IANS)

If I am devil, Modi is super demon: Lalu Prasad

A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi called RJD chief Lalu Prasad a 'shaitan' (devil), the former Bihar chief minister hit back on Friday saying Modi was a 'super demon'. "If I am a 'shaitan' because I am raising the voice against the RSS-BJP conspiracy to end reservations for Dalits and OBCs, Modi is a real 'Brahm Pishach' (super demon)," Lalu Prasad told the media here. He said Modi abused him because he belonged to the Yaduvanshi community and was from the backward caste. "Modi has insulted all Yaduvanshis by abusing me. 'Michael Phelps Swimming' launched in Goa

A non-competitive, global swimming programme, 'Michael Phelps Swimming', promoted by the Olympic gold medal champion, was launched in India, with the aim to promote the sport. Speaking to reporters at the launch of the programme, the US Olympic champions' sister, Hilary Phelps, said that the swimming programme was designed on techniques practiced by Phelps, the most decorated Olympian of all time. Phelps has won 22 medals, including 18 golds. "'Michael Phelps Swimming' is aimed at promoting safe swimming by using the same techniques and philosophy that made Michael the world's top swimmer," Phelps said at the launch of the programme in association with the Goa-based Terrapin Swimming Academy. SC for environment cess on commercial vehicles entering Delhi

The Supreme Court on Friday indicated that it will impose an environment compensatory charge (ECC) ranging from Rs.700 to Rs.1,300 on commercial vehicles entering Delhi as a transit route for their onward journey. The apex court bench of Chief Justice H.L. Dattu, Justice Arun Mishra and Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel, while giving this indication, reserved order to be pronounced on October 12. However, if was clarified that commercial vehicles carrying essential commodities, food stuff and passengers and emergency vehicles, including ambulances, would be exempted from the environment cess. The imposition of ECC would be for four months on an experimental basis and the money collected would go to the Delhi government. (Source: IANS)

Beef party: Kashmir MLA who was thrashed stages protest

Legislator Engineer Rashid, who was thrashed on Thursday by two BJP MLAs for hosting a beef party, staged a protest here on Friday and along with his supporters tried to block the entry of other lawmakers into the Jammu and Kashmir legislature complex. Dozens of supporters of the independent lawmaker from north Kashmir's Langate constituency appeared at the gate of the state legislature complex on Friday morning and tried to block the entry of legislators into the complex. They shouted slogans "Yahaan Kya Chelay Ga -- Nizam-e-Mustafa" (Only the Sharia code will be allowed in Kashmir). The protestors were removed from the gates by police in order to make way for the legislators into the complex. (Source: IANS)
