Finance Ministry interested in Indian Oil disinvestment

To achieve its Rs 40,000 crore disinvestment target, the Finance Ministry wishes to sell 10% of the stake of government in Indian Oil Corporation (IOC). This will be done by the end of this month. Overseas roadshows for the IOC stake sale were put off by the Department of Disinvestment last month because of the opposition from the company and the Petroleum Ministry. Poor market conditions were blamed for the same. London, US, Singapore, Hong Kong and Dubai were selected for the roadshows. On Friday IOS share went up to 1.62% to Rs 213.20. On January 18 it was at Rs 375. At present price, the sale of 19.16 crore IOC shares would bring more than Rs 4,000 crore. As of September, government’s share in India’s largest oil refiner is 78.92%. Five merchant bankers have been selected for managing the sale of IOC share that includes Citibank, HSBC and UBS Securities. But selling share at this point means that these will be sold at low price. Losses from foreign exchange and selling diesel, cooking gas and kerosene below cost has led to an 82.5 per cent drop in net profit to Rs 1,683.92 crore for the July-September quarter for IOC. But before selling 10 per cent in Engineers India Ltd (EIL), government is waiting for disinvestment in IOC.
