Anti-Assam riots protest: Two killed, more than 50 injured in Mumbai

A protest by a number of Muslim organizations in Mumbai  to condemn the attacks on Muslims in Myanmar and Assam violence, turned violent which resulted in death of two people and injury of over 50 people which included two policemen. More than 25000 members of different organizations have assembled for the protest. A red alert has been issued in the city. The situation slipped out of control at around 3.15 p.m. The group pelted stones on city buses and set media and police vans on fire. Around 10 buses and six vans were damaged. 


51 killed, 46 injured as bus falls into gorge in Himachal Pradesh

In an accident where an overcrowded bus fell into a gorge in Himachal Pradesh, 51 people, including 18 women, were killed and 46 others injured in Chamba in Himachal Pradesh as per the police reports.The private bus skidded off the road and fell into the 300-feet deep gorge near Rajera, which is at a distance of 10 km from Chamba. The bus which was 40 seater was over crowded and people were sitting on its roof as well. 39 people died on spot and the injured have been admitted to the hospital in Chamba. As per the witnesses the driver lost control while maneuvering a turn. 

Yogeshwar Dutt wins bronze in men's 60kg wrestling

 India's Yogeshwar Dutt got the country another bronze at the Olympics by defeating North Korea's Myong Ri Jong 3-1 in the men's 60kg freestyle wrestling event at the ExCel Arena. This is India's fifth medal at the 2012 London Games, and the best medal tally the country secured in the Olympics. Yogeshwar won all the three repechage bouts. He was just a win away from an Olympic medal as he defeated Franklin Gomez Matos of Puerto Rico in Repechage 2 to qualify for the men's 60kg bronze medal match. Yogeshwar had earlier defeated  Masoud Esmaeilpoorjouybari of Iran 3-1 to face North Korean Jong Myong Ri in the bronze medal play-off match. Yogeshwar though losing the first period 3-0 came back in style to win the second period 3-2 against the Iranian and in the third period he posted a win with 4-0. While in the first repechage, Yogeshwar won 3-0 against Franklin Gomez Matos of Puerto Rico Matos. 

PM would welcome Rahul's entry in government

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said on Saturday, August 11 that he would welcome the Congress general secretary into the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government. This was stated  after Vice President Hamid Ansari's oath-taking ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan. This brings into focus again Rahul Gandhi's statement that he was willing to execute a more proactive role in the party as well as the government. Changes within the party to this effect are expected after the monsoon session of the parliament ends. 

Q1 net profit of Rs.6,078 crore for ONGC

ONGC stated that it has recorrded a net profit growth of 48.4 percent at Rs.6,078 crore for Q2 compared to that in previous fiscal of Rs.4,095 crore for the same period. From January to March 2012, the company recorded a net profit of Rs.5,645 crore. There was a net profit of Rs.25,123 crore for the year 2011-12. The company's sales revenue in the first quarter of the current fiscal spiked up by 23.9 percent and stood at Rs.20,149 crore compared to Rs.16,268 crore earned in the corresponding quarter of 2011-12.

Nehru Boat Race mesmerizes thousands

It was packed house on either bank of the Punnamada lake as thousands witnessed the 60th edition of the Nehru Boat Race Saturday.Chief guest Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar, Vayalar Ravi, K.C. Venugopal, Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and a number of political leaders from Kerala were present for the event which began at 3 p.m. The scullers moved their oars in symphony to a rousing welcome by the spectators. It was in 1952 when the then Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru visited the state and a pageantry of boats went along with him from Kottayam to Alappuzha. A race was organized in  Nehru's honour who was so pleased by the performance of the oarsmen, that he got into a snake boat. When he returned to Delhi, he donated a silver trophy, a replica of a snake boat mounted on a wooden abacus with an inscription and his signature to the winners. Since that time this is the trophy that the winner of the snake boat race is awarded.
