7,075 villages hit in Maharashtra with drought

The drought situation in Maharashtra has gone worse with more villages requiring water supply through tankers. The number of such villages and hamlets has gone up to 7,075 from 6,488 last Monday. The number of tankers which are pressed into action for water supply on daily basis had increased to 2,408 from 2,280 last week. As many as 11,801 villages across the state – except the coastal regions - are facing the severest drought in the past four decades. Governor K. Sankaranarayanan on Monday stated that the state government will be taking additional measures to handle the water scarcity situation in the state. The failure of the monsoon for the second consecutive year in the state was a cause for worry. He specified in February 2012, only 230 tankers were required to supply drinking water while this year the number has increased 10-fold at 2,136 tankers. Out of the total 34 districts in Maharashtra, the worst-affected are Solapur, Ahmednagar, Sangli, Pune, Satara, Beed and Nashik.The situation is grave in Buldhana, Latur, Osmanabad, Nanded, Aurangabad, Jalna, Jalgaon and Dhule districts.

Ram Singh, Delhi gang-rape prime accused, commits suicide

Ram Singh, the prime accused of the Dec 16 gang-rape in the capital, allegedly committed suicide in Delhi's high security Tihar Jail on Monday, but his family claimed he was murdered. As per jail officials Ram Singh, 35, who was there in ward number 5 of Jail number 3, hanged himself by a window grill, and he used a bed sheet for this purpose. The strange fact is that none of the three other inmates of the cell noticed this. He was found hanging from the grill by an Indo-Tibetan Border Police constable. Ram Singh was kept in a cell which had three more undertrials, whose names were not revealed by the officials. Ram Singh used a bucket to reach the window to hang himself. Judicial inquiry is being done and the exact cause of death would be evident after the report is submitted by the judicial officer. The report will also include post-mortem examination report by forensic specialist. His family stated that Ram Singh has told them a number of times that he was threatened in the jail. His lawyer V.K. Anand, also termed this as a "foul play" and demanded a full-fledged inquiry into the incident. Ram Singh’s suicide watch was called off after it was observed that his behavior was normal and there were no signs of depression.

India's exports rise by 4.25 percent; trade deficit reduces

India's exports rose by 4.25 percent to $26.26 billion in February, thus recording a positive growth for the second consecutive month, strengthened by revival of demands in Europe. Trade deficit reduced to $14.9 billion in February as compared to $20 billion the previous month. Exports rose year-on-year for the third time in the first 11 months of the current financial year. There was marginal increase of 0.82 percent in exports at $25.58 billion in January, after reduction in the previous eight months in a row. Cumulative value of exports in April-February period of 2012-13 slumped by 4 percent at $265.95 billion. India's imports in February rose by 2.6 percent to $41.18 billion and the monthly trade deficit was of $14.9 billion.Cumulative value of imports for the period April-February was $448.03 billion, as against $446.93 billion during the same period of previous year, thus recording only a marginal increase of 0.25 percent. The trade gap was lowered due to revival in exports and the marginal increase in imports.

Vidya's look in 'Ghanchakkar' to be well promoted

National Award winning actress Vidya Balan will adopt a new look in her upcoming comedy "Ghanchakkar" and director Rajkumar Gupta has planned a special promotional campaign around this. He said that her look has already got lot of buzz in the industry and that this would be quite talked about in this year.Producer UTV Motion Pictures will also plan an exhibition of clothes that Vidya wears in the film. They will be exhibited after the trailer launch scheduled for March end.The movie will release on June 21 and Vidya with Emraan Hashmi will be seen together again after they teamed up for "The Dirty Picture" for which Vidya had won the National Award. This is Gupta's first movie based on comedy after the thriller "Aamir" and real life based movie "No One Killed Jessica".

We took drugs for 'adventure': Boxer Ram Singh

Boxer Ram Singh, kept under detention in the multi-million dollar drug racket, stated he and Olympics bronze medallist boxer Vijender Singh tried out drugs for "adventure". He said they were in constant contact with drug smuggler Anoop Singh Kahlon, who was nabbed on March 7. They tried less than two gm each of drugs and did not take it as a routine or for improving their stamina or performance. 26 kg heroin, worth Rs.130 crore in the international market was seized from the possession of Kahlon who was arrested on Thursday. He is supposed to tell the police that Vijender Singh and Ram Singh were his "clients". Ram Singh said Vijender was in touch with some Mumbai celebrities, who went to  rave parties and took drugs. They did not pay anything to Kahlon for drugs. The police informed they will summon Vijender Singh for questioning on Wednesday. Vijender stated,"I have nothing to do with drugs. I am ready to join investigations at any point of time and am also ready to undergo any kind of dope test."
