13 December 2018 Current Events 2001 Parliamentary attack: 17th anniversary; PM Modi salutes the martyrs

Today marks the 17th anniversary of attacks on the Indian Parliament. The 2001 attacks had resulted in the death of 10 innocent people, including police personnel, as well as civilians.

Earlier this morning, PM Narendra Modi tweeted about the incident, saying "We value the valour of those who were martyred during the dastardly attack on our Parliament on this day in 2001. Their courage and heroism inspired every Indian".


Telangana Legislative Assembly: KCR to take oath as CM today

After gaining a majority of nearly two-third in the state, the Telangana Rashtra Samithi has risen to power once again. The incumbent Chief Minister KCR will be taking his oath once again today. While a total of 66 seats are required for a majority, the counting concluded with 88 out of 119 seats in TRS's bag.

Meanwhile, Congress has not yet declared the new CM for Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh. The announcement is expected to come later in the evening.


Shaktikanta Das appointed governor of RBI

Within 24 hours of Urjit Patel's resignation, the government has appointed Shaktikanta Das as the new governor of the Reserve Bank of India. On Tuesday, Das resigned from the 15th Finance Commission, expected to take over his new post in a few days.

Urjit Patel resigned on Monday, following months of strained relations between the central government and RBI. Now, Das will join RBI as its 25th governor. He was the economic affairs secretary from 2015 to 2017, a staunch supporter of demonetisation.


State assembly elections 2018 conclude: Congress emerges back

With Madhya Pradesh's nail-biting fight ending earlier this morning, results of all the five states' polling are finally out.

In Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Congress emerged as the single largest party, while BJP had to take the trailing seat. However, in Rajasthan, INC fell one seat short of a clear majority, and two seats in Madhya Pradesh. In Telangana, TRS won with a bang. The Mizo National Front (MNF) overthrew the reigning Congress party out of power in Mizoram.
