Jan Lokpal Bill gets opposed by 42 MLAs, not introduced in Delhi Assembly


Jan Lokpal Bill could not be introduced in the Delhi Assemby as 42 MLAs of the Opposition voted against it. 27 members were in favor of the introduction. Earlier Lt. Governor of Delhi, Najeeb Jung had specified to the Delhi assembly of not considering the Jan Lokpal bill as he had not given his nod to it but the AAP had stated it will proceed with the bill. The Governor has stated in the letter given to the assembly Speaker M.S. Dhir that since the bill has not got his approval so its discussion should not be considered. Manish Sisodia, Delhi Education Minister had informed that AAP government will not be dropping the Jan Lokpal bill which aims at stopping corruption in high positions. Sisodia had also added that the AAP government will try all means to see that the bill is passed along with the Swaraj bill, which delves into development of the power of governance to people with "mohalla sabhas". The Delhi government had earlier the plan to table the bill on Thursday itself but waited for a day so that the legislators can look into the draft legislation. It has to be noted here that Kejriwal has warned he will quit office if the bill does not get approved in the Delhi assembly.

SC asks for all documents on Birbhum gang rape from West Bengal government


The Supreme Court asked the West Bengal government to present all the details like the FIR, case diary, witness statements and the final forensic report related to the gang rape case in Birbhum. Chief Justice P. Sathasivam directed the state government to send these documents after going through the report by the West Bengal chief secretary on the gang rape of a 19-year-old tribal girl in Birbhum’s Labpur village. The CJ also specified that the court was of the opinion that some steps have been taken but there was a need for more effective steps. The matter will come up for hearing next on March 4. On January 24, the Supreme Court had taken suo motu cognizance of the brutal gang rape where as many as 13 men raped a girl acting on the direction of a kangaroo court as a mode of punishment for the girl who had fallen in love with a man from a different community. The apex court had termed the incident "very disturbing” and had sent a notice to the West Bengal government asking for a report from the district judge within a week.

New Toll Policy soon in Maharashtra: CM promises to Raj Thackeray

MNS chief Raj Thackeray after listening to the promise made by Maharashtra CM, Prithviraj Chavan in a two hour meeting stated that he was calling off his protest due on February 21. At the same time he has asked the citizens not to pay toll till the new policy as promised by the CM is launched. The Maharashtra CM has stated 22 toll plaza will be closed on immediate basis and a new policy will come in vogue prior to the poll model code of conduct begins from the 1st week of March. Chavan agreed that toll collection had serious irregularities and that the new policy would be launched as soon as it gets the approval of the cabinet. ST buses would get exemption from toll and BEST may also get this facility which will bring down the fares. In the toll policy which was submitted to the government there are aspects like setting up of booths only 5km beyond the civic limits, toll calculation based on road length and projects based on time, etc.

Inflation at 7 month low in January stands at 5.05%


The wholesale price based inflation in the country has slipped to 5.05% in January, which is the minimum in seven months. This was due to slow increase in food and vegetables prices. The inflation last year in the same month was 7.31% and 6.16% in December 2013. Food inflation stood at 8.8% in January much lower than 13.68% in December as per the data given by the ministry of commerce and industry here. Prices of vegetables that had jumped by 57.33% year-on-year basis in December registered slower increase in January that is 16.6%. Prices of onions increased by 6.69% in January, in the previous month it had increased year-on-year by 39.56%. Prices of potato soared by 21.73 percent, cereals’ prices increased by 9.27%, there was 5.32% increase in prices of fruits and milk price went up by 7.22% during the month under review. At the same time prices of pulse dropped down by 6.10%.

In the secret report which was submitted by the Justice Mukul Mudgal committee to the Supreme Court, there is a statement from a Superintendent of Police in Tamil Nadu, G Sampath Kumar which has the mention of Indian skipper MS Dhoni. In the statement a bookie with the name Kitty has stated that Dhoni and CSK Chief, Gurunath Meiyappan, who is the son-in-law of BCCI President N Srinivasan, were participants of the "deal" that was related to IPL fixing. The police officer stated that they came across this information while doing an investigation of a fake passport case. In fact Kumar had sent recommendations for the further probe in this aspect but he was transferred and is at present SP, Railways, in Thiruchirapally. There is no information whether an investigation was carried out in this or not.
