The Finance Minister on February 1 announced the National Health Protection Scheme (NHPS) named “Modicare”, which is the biggest global plan to provide health cover benefits to a large population. The Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee has claimed that the state has already enrolled 50 lakh people under its own “Swasthya Sathi programme” and has taken a decision to opt out of the scheme. This makes West Bengal the first state to withdraw from the world's largest health care program.
