14 September 2020 Current Events Former JNU Student Umar Khalid Booked in Connection with Delhi Riots

Delhi Police have arrested a former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student on Sunday (September 13) for his alleged involvement in Delhi riots in February 2020. Earlier, Khalid was booked under the ‘stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act in another case related to the riots. On the matter, the United Against Hate group, whose membership is Umar Khalid, said that "After 11 hours of interrogation, the Delhi Police Special Cell has arrested Umar Khalid as a conspirator in the Delhi Riots case. The fairy tale narrative that DP (Delhi Police) has been spinning and criminalising protests in the garb of investigating riots finds yet another victim," Riots for which Khalid was arrested took place in north-east Delhi from February 23 to 26 where almost 50 people lost their lives, and many were injured. The riots flared up after weeks of protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and the National Register of Citizens in different parts of the city. Umar Khalid’s arrest came after Delhi Police named some of the figures in the disclosure statement like CPI (M) leader Sitaram Yechury, Swaraj Abhiyan Chief Yogendra Yadav, economist Jayati Ghosh, Delhi University professor Apoorvaanad and filmmaker Rahul Roy. Their names came in the confession of three students of women’s collective Pinjra Tod members and JNU students Devangana Kalita and Natasha Narwal, and Gulfisha Fathima of Jamia Millia Islamia in the Jafrabad violence. As per Delhi Police, the students have not only confessed their complicity in the riots but also named the eminent personalities to be their mentors in the protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act.
