Inflation eases to 5-Year Low

The Wholesale Price Index, one of the major parameters gauging inflation, has dropped to just 3.74 per cent. This 5-year low inflation rate was achieved due to fall in fuel and food prices, and definitely favourable base effect. Food inflation eased from 8.43 per cent in July to 5.15 in August. On an year-on-year basis, vegetable prices dropped by 45 per cent. Fuel inflation decreased from  7.4 per cent in July to 4.54 per cent in August. Fuel prices eased due to fall in global Brent crude prices.

SC seeks Identity of Whistleblower from Prashant Bhushan

The Supreme Court has asked renowned lawyer and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Prashant Bhushan to disclose identity of the whistleblower who gave him the visitors’ logbook of CBI director’s Delhi residence before giving verdict. The concerned bench at the apex court is headed by Justice H L Dattu. The SC has said this disclosure is necessary because the apex court can’t pass order on a petition until and unless the source of information is revealed. 

J&K Flood Update

National Defence Response Force, Indian Air Force, and Army have till now rescued 1,84,000 people in J&K. Flood water has receded but civic problems have started cropping up now. Fears are rising that there may be an outbreak of water-borne diseases due to stagnant water. Till now 200 people have died and more than 1 lakh people are still trapped in the flood hit areas. Indian companies have geared up their effort to help the flood victims in J&K. Puducherry Chief Minister N Rangasamy has announced Rs 1 crore for relief works.

Compromise Formula of Maharashtra BJP Rejected by Shiv Sena

The 135 seat sharing formula offered by BJP for the upcoming Maharashtra Assembly elections has been rejected by Shiv Sena. The latter wants to contest on at least 150 seats out of the total 288 member Assembly. After this, the divide between the allies has widened. The compromise formula was offered by BJP when Shiv Sena earlier threatened to break alliance.

Tech-Savvy Andhra CM starts India's First eCabinet

Andhra Pradesh CM N Chandrababu Naidu has conducted India’s first “eCabinet” with his council of ministers. Through this Andhra Pradesh state cabinet has not only gone paperless but also taken a step further in eGovernance. The cabinet meeting took place with ministers having iPads in their hands. On one hand, meeting’s agenda were recorded electronically, and on the other, important subjects for elaborate discussion were presented through power-point presentation.

Heads of 6 Political Parties Issued Showcause by Central Information Commission

On the issue of non-compliance of Central Information Commission’s order to implement RTI Act, CIC has issued showcause notice to INC Chief Sonia Gandhi, BJP President Amit Shah, and heads of 4 other political parties. CIC, on the plea of social activist Subhash Agrawal, had declared six political parties - INC, BJP, CPI, CPIM, BSP, and NCP – as public authorities. This step had brought these political parties under the RTI Act ambit.

Environment Rules Relaxed to build Roads along Disputed Border Areas with China

With Chinese President Xi Jinping visiting India during September 17-18, India is gearing up to take stronger stance when it comes to building transport network facilities along disputed border with China. For speeding up construction of roads to the tune of 6000 kms in the bordering areas, Environment Minister of India Prakash Javadekar has relaxed Environmental Rules within 62 miles of disputed border areas in Anunachal Pradesh.

Nitin Gadkari Emphasises on Better Roads, Waterways, and Ports

Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister of Road Transport & Highways and Shipping, has stressed upon development of waterway transport system and road construction. He has also tried to ensure sanitation and water supply facility during the last three months at office. While talking about the importance of waterway transport, the minister stressed upon three advantages: less cost, less accidents, and less pollution. Nitin Gadkari also said that better port and inland waterway facilities can contribute at least two per cent of GDP growth.

SFIO Findings: Saradha Group ran Ponzi Schemes

 Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) has completed its investigation into the ‘chit fund scam’ of 14 Saradha group companies. They found out that Saradha was indeed running ‘ponzi schemes’. After these findings, Saradha group is going to face prosecutions on the charges of violating several laws. Corporate Affairs Ministry said that some of the Acts the group had violated include SEBI Act, Companies Act, and Indian Penal Code’s several provisions.

MoM Prepares to Enter the Mars Orbit on September 24

ISRO scientists have started the process of 'waking up' Mars Orbiter Mission’s engine. As per reports, the commands required for MOM’s smooth entry into the orbit of Mars have been uploaded. It will take 13 hours to complete the process. ISRO scientists have said that the orbiter will enter the orbit of Mars on September 24, 2014.
