Controlling inflation was the main focus of RBI – Raghuram Rajan

Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Raghuram Rajan said that main focus of the RBI is to control the inflation. He said this while addressing the Bancon 2013 conference hosted by the Indian Banks’ Association in Mumbai. With inflation every segment of the society gets affected mainly poor. Inflation was leading to a separation between the investors, manufacturers, producers both with consumers and savers. Because of inflation, interest rate was too low and that is why more saving was towards gold. He also said that complaints from producers were coming against high interest rates. The Consumer Price Index as well as the Wholesale Price Index crossed 10% and 7% mark, respectively. It is higher than the market expectations. But the next step of the central bank cannot be determined on the basis of a single data point or number. He also said that data regarding weak state of the economy and good kharif and rabi harvest is still awaited that will affect everything. Also the efforts of the central bank would become clearer over a medium term in coming 6-12 months. Restructuring and ever-greening must be distinguished. He said that problem should be recognized rather than postponing it.
