17 December 2018 Current Events Andhra Pradesh: 9 coastal districts now on high alert; CyclonePhethai likely to hit today
Following chances of Cyclone Phethai hitting the state, coastal regions of Andhra Pradesh have been put on high alert. The cyclone is expected to arrive at the area between Vishakhapatnam and Kakinada today.
CM Naidu has sent out directives to Collectors of coastal districts to adopt all precautions and ensure no lives are lost. The areas likely to be affected are- Yanam district (Puducherry), East and West Godavari, Vishakhapatnam, and Guntur districts. The whirlwind speed can go up to 100 km/h today.

Congress-won Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh to have oath-taking ceremony today

Beginning with Ashok Gehlot in Rajasthan, the Congress CM-designates will be swearing in today in all the three states. In Madhya Pradesh, veteran leader Kamal Nath will be taking the Chief Ministerial post. In Chhattisgarh, after great deliberation, the state leadership has been given to Bhupesh Baghel.

INC president Rahul Gandhi will be attending all the three ceremonies, with the Rajasthan CM already appointed earlier today. Sachin Pilot has taken the oath for Deputy-Chief Minister.


1984 anti-Sikh riots: Congress leader Sajjan Kumar given life imprisonment; acquittal reversed

Sajjan Kumar has been asked to surrender by December 31st, also prohibiting him from leaving the city till then.

Earlier today, the Delhi High Court sentenced Congress leader Sajjan Kumar to life imprisonment, reversing the initial acquittal. The bench composed of Justice S Muralidhar and Justice Vinod Goel, who also found Kumar guilty of abetment offenses, delivering hate speeches against the Sikh community, disrupting communal harmony.
