18 April 2020 Current Events DCGI Approves MW Vaccine as a Trial for Covid-19

Scientists from all over the world are working towards a vaccine to contain the spread of novel Coronavirus. Indian scientists have also come forward to test a "multi-purpose" vaccine that has established evidence of being effective against leprosy also and which also improves immunity. Dr Shekhar Mande, Director General of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), said the same vaccine would be used to see if it can help tackle the situation. Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) has also approved the MW vaccine for Coronavirus. Apart from DCGI's permission, there are two more formal approvals to be taken to start to develop the vaccine that can fight against COVID-19. Further, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has said that the development of a "specific vaccine" for COVID-19 would take at least 12 months or longer. As per the Health Ministry (as on 18 April 2020, 08:00 GMT+5:30) , the total number of cases in India stands 14,378 and at 456 fatalities.
