19 August 2020 Current Events India is Eyeing Oxford-AstraZeneca Vaccine for COVID-19

As confirmed by the officials, India is eyeing the "Oxford-AstraZeneca Vaccine" candidate. If so, will be the first shot against COVID-19 to be available for Indians by the end of 2020. At the same time, locally developed candidates are also being watched closely as it is believed that they might also enter the market in a few weeks. Although, two other local candidates have already entered the market for human trials and a source confirmed to a leading news portal that "If the vaccine gets the nod, and given that it is being produced in India, it makes sense to use it". Oxford’s AstraZeneca has tied up as a manufacturing partner with the Pune-based Serum Institute. Serum has already begun with its advanced phases of human trial (Phase 2 and 3) in the country with around 1,600 people aged above 18 years in across 17 chosen sites across India. Other two vaccines namely Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin (joint venture with ICMR) and Zydus Cadil’s Zycov D are both in their early phases 1 and 2. Further, Serum’s trial is considered to be the largest for COVID-19 so far in India.
