Manipur elections: Delhi CM donates Rs 50,000 to Irom Sharmila's party

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has donated Rs 50,000 to the party of rights activist Irom Sharila, which is fighting elections in Manipur.

With acute shortage of finances and manpower, Sharmila’s party Peoples’ Resurgence and Justice Alliance (PRJA) has taken online route for crowdfunding to raise funds. Also the party is campaigning on cycle to reach out to the people.

Kejriwal said that he is donating an amount of Rs 50,000 to Irom Sharmila. He also made an appeal to people on Twitter to help her.

PRJA is the first regional party of Manipur which has gone out for crowdfunding to finance the poll expenses in the state. According to the party sources, online crowdfunding is an idea in order to involve more people, thus bringing transparency in election funding.

The party has so far collected Rs 4.5 lakh through crowdfunding.

Shahabuddin shifted to Tihar Jail

In a secret operation on Saturday, the Bihar police has transferred don and former RJD MP Mohammad Shahabuddin from Siwan prison, Patna to Tihar Jail in New Delhi on Sampoorna Kranti Express in the evening.

The action came after Supreme Court’s order on February 15 instructing the state government to move Shahabuddin to Tihar jail within a week. This was to ensure a fair trial in the cases filed against him through video conferencing.

The apex court order came in response to pleas of Asha Ranjan, wife of slain Siwan journalist Rajdeo Ranjan, and Chandrakeshwar Prasad, whose three sons were allegedly killed at the don’s behest.

A group of police personnel is accompanying the don-turned-politician on the train.

Tight security measures were put in place when Shahabuddin started from Siwan jail on Saturday. While details of his transfer was kept a secret till the last moment, some of his followers got a hint of the movement and followed the police motorcade while raising slogans in support of their leader.
