Sensex slips to 2014 levels

The BSE Sensex fell by nearly 650 points to slip below the cognitive 24,000 mark for the very first time since 16 May, 2014, the day when current Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, led the BJP to a giant win in the general elections. Additionally, the Indian rupee also fell to 68 per dollar, hitting a 29-month low.

Apple eyeing to open retail stores in India soon

Today, Apple filed an application with the Indian government asking for permission to open its first retail store in the country. With stores in China, Japan and Hong Kong, the Cupertino-based technology company has sought permission both for single brand retailing as well as selling its products online. Apple already has its iPhones available in India via a wide network of small “Apple-designed” outlets and various third-party retailers like Vodafone and Airtel.

India loses to Australia in the 4th ODI in Canberra

Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan’s centuries went in vain as India got defeated by Australia in the fourth ODI held in Canberra. While Australia recorded a giant score of 348-8, suicidal batting by some of the Indian players made the host country the winners. Superb batting from Aussies David Warner and Aaron Finch led Australia to a commendable win by 25 runs.  

Fee hike only after govt approval, says Delhi HC

The Delhi High Court has ruled that all private unaided schools allotted land by the DDA (Delhi Development Authority) won’t be permitted to hike fees without the government’s permission. Applicable on nearly 400 private schools in Delhi, the verdict also instructs government’s directorate of education (DoE) to ensure that the schools comply with the terms and conditions of the letter of allotment of land regarding fee hike.

Two militants assassinated in Kashmir's Pulwama

The Kashmir Police started an operation in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district after security forces received information about the presence of militants at Naina village. With the troops of Army’s Rashtriya Rifles and Special Operation Group of Police continuing cordon for the entire night, an army spokesperson has confirmed the killing of two militants with the operation still in progress.

Vodafone 4G to arrive in Haryana, UP East this April

Already launched in December in Kochi, Vodafone India is looking to deploy 4G networks in Haryana and Uttar Pradesh (East) in April, immediately after it is done with the launch in the five service areas by March. With the Kolkata launch scheduled for 25 January 2016, Vodafone India is offering 1GB of free 4G data on pre-booking its 4G SIMs in Kolkata, bookings for which have already started from 12 January.

Asin ties knot with Micromax co-founder Rahul

Asin of Ghajini fame got married to Micromax co-founder Rahul Sharma in two private ceremonies held in New Delhi. Akshay Kumar, Asin’s co-star in Housefull 2 had introduced her to Mr. Sharma and served as the best man, marking his presence on both the occasions. A private party is scheduled to take place at Rahul Sharma’s Delhi farmhouse today, followed by a grand reception in Mumbai on 23 January.

BSE Sensex and Nifty open lower today

Weaker Asian markets made the BSE Sensex and Nifty open lower today. The Nifty futures trading on Singapore Stock Exchange has already fallen by seventy points to close at Rs. 7,367. Additionally, the Rupee also opened lower at 67.77 per dollar against yesterday’s close of 67.65. Unaffected by this low, the Reliance Industries recorded profit of Rs. 7,218 crore with Nifty stocks like Ultratech Cement and Axis Bank also reporting earnings.

8% luxury tax for ICU stay in Bengaluru

In Bengaluru, patients being treated in the Intensive Care Unit of any hospital (with nightly charge more than Rs, 1,000) would soon have to pay an additional 8 percent as luxury tax. Bengaluru hospitals quote the luxury tax as an attempt to ensure sterile conditions and not for the luxury purpose. Though the hospitals have not passed on information regarding the new fee to patients, they plan to appeal to the government for reconsideration of the luxury tax. 

IRNSS-1E successfully launched from Sriharikota

Today at 9:30 a.m., India successfully launched its fifth navigation satellite in space. Named as IRNSS-1E, the satellite is on board PSLV-C31 rocket and has been launched from Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh. As the fifth navigation satellite in the IRNSS space system, the IRNSS-1E includes seven satellites which are at par with the American Global Positioning System (GPS). The launch has brought India a step closer to an operational ‘desi-GPS’.
