TV journalist arrested for Guwahati molestation case

Police has arrested TV journalist Gaurav Jyoti Neog in the  G.S. Road molestation case that has outraged the nation. He has been booked under "Section 294 (obscene acts and songs), Section 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman), and Section 34 of the IPC," as per Senior Superintendent of Police (City) A.P. Tiwari. Neog who worked for News Live left his job after he was accused of instigating the mob who molested a teenager on a busy road in Guwahati. Right to Information (RTI) activist Akhil Gogoi had alleged that Neog played the role of the instigator in the entire incident. 12 people have been arrested so far in this case and police has seized the raw video footage captured by the TV channel.



Court orders suspension of construction of mosque

The Delhi High Court has ordered suspension of new construction on the ruins of a 17th century mosque which was discovered when the Delhi Metro dug up the area at Subhas Park to lay new lines. The court has directed Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to take control over the site and to find out if there was an existence of Akbarabadi Masjid whose ruins have been reportedly found here. The legislator of the area Shoiab Iqbal who was overseeing the construction of the brick and mortar mosque at the site said court's directive was "against people's sentiments and faith".Thousands assembled at the site near the historic Jama Masjid for Friday prayers before the court ruling came. 

Government to sell stakes in SAIL, will raise Rs 4000 crore

 The government has taken the decision to sell through auction 10.82 percent stake in the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), which will add Rs.4,000 crore to the exchequer analyzed at current market prices. This move is part of the government's target to raise Rs.30,000 crore through the process of disinvestment in public sector firms. This decision was taken on Thursday July 18 by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The government has at present 85.82 percent stake in SAIL, after this sale the stake would come down to 75%. The government's intends to divest its stake in Oil India, National Aluminium Company, Hindustan Aeronautics, Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd and Hindustan Copper as well in the current financial year for its Rs.30,000 crore target.  



India to play in Champions Trophy hockey

India has got a chance to play in the Champions Trophy after the International Hockey Federation (FIH) decided to increase the number of participating teams from six to eight. This came as a surprise after it was denied to play the host to the trophy last year by FIH on account of problematic governance of the sport.The last time India played Champions Trophy was in 2005  as hosts in Chennai when they finished 5th in the tournament. The tournament will be held on Dec 1-9. Other teams apart from Australia and India are Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands and New Zealand. Decision is yet to be taken on two other teams.
