20 May 2020 Current Events Cyclone Amphan to Hit West Bengal on Wednesday, Nearly Three Lakh People Evacuated So Far

Considered to be one of the most devastating storms, Cyclone Amphan is expected to hit West Bengal this afternoon. Amphan was first a super cyclone than an incapacitated "extremely severe cyclonic storm" on Tuesday. As the storm made headway towards the Indian coast, some parts of Bengal and Odisha observed strong winds and heavy rains. So far, more than three lakh people have been evacuated in Bengal. The officials said that most of the cyclone shelters are already full with quarantined migrant workers who have returned due to the nationwide lockdown. Hence, schools and colleges are being used as shelters. Officials have also warned of massive destruction when the Amphan arrives as it's speed is expected to be gusting up to 185 kilometres per hour when it crosses West Bengal's Digha and Bangladesh's Hatiya. Considering the vulnerable areas such as "red plus zones", Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee stayed overnight in the control room.
