Union Home Minister and Opposition Lock Horns on Church and Minority Attack Issue

Opposition parties, including the Indian National Congress, Left parties, and IUML, staged a walkout of the parliament today. They did this in protest over Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh’s statement that there was a "deliberate attempt" to repeatedly raise incidents of alleged communal violence. He made the statement while answering KC Venugopal’s concern on rising incidents of attacks on churches and minorities all over India. While Congress’s Venugopal referred to increasing dangerous trend of assault on minorities, Home Minister reacted by saying that he is ready to table a detailed report to show how many attacks took place against the minorities under which government and went on to say that raising the same issue repeatedly in the parliament is a "deliberate attempt" of the opposition to denigrate the government.

Net Neutrality Issue Rocks Indian Parliament

Rahul Gandhi, Vice President of the Congress party, raised the Net Neutrality issue in Lok Sabha and alleged that Narendra Modi government floated the net neutrality debate for handing over internet space to the corporate sector. CPIM’s M B Rajesh raised the issue during Zero Hour and said that TRAI’s consultation paper blatantly supports telecom and internet service providers’ attack on net neutrality. While negating all accusations, Union Minister of Communications and Information Technology Ravi Shankar Prasad stressed on his government’s commitment to Net Neutrality. In another development, sixty start-ups have written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and urged him to protect net neutrality so that India can achieve Digital India dream.

Tragedy strikes at AAP's Anti-Land Acquisition Bill Rally at Delhi's Jantar Mantar

As Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was attacking Narendra Modi government by regarding it as super rich and anti-farmer during Aam Aadmi Party’s anti-Land Bill rally at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, tragedy struck unexpectedly as a farmer from Rajasthan’s Nangal Jhamarwada village in Dausa named Gajendra Singh committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree. The farmer also left a suicide note where he mentioned that he was disowned by his father after recent crop damage due to hailstorm and has three children to feed. Though the AAP volunteers tried their best to save the farmer by bringing him down from the tree and rushing him to Ram Manohar Lohia hospital nearby, the farmer died.

BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty Close in Green after Five-day Losing Streak

Both BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty performed well today, ending a five-day losing streak. While Nifty closed well above psychological level 8,400 at 8429.70, up by 51.95 points or 0.62 per cent, BSE Sensex was up by 214.09 points or 0.77 per cent to close at 27890.13. The sectors that performed well are FMCG, capital goods, banking, and pharmaceuticals. Sun Pharma that dipped by more than 10 per cent yesterday as Japanese Drug Maker Daiichi sold all its stocks it received during merger of Ranbaxy with Sun Pharma, today increased by 1.6 per cent. Some of the major gainers at Nifty are ACC, Yes, Bank, Larsen & Toubro, Hero MotoCorp, Axis Bank, and others.   

Yes Bank's Q4 Net Profit Increases by 28 Per Cent

Fourth quarter report for 2014-15 FY published by Yes Bank shows that net profit of the company increased from Rs. 430 crore (Q4 2013-14) to Rs. 551 crore (Q4 2014-15), an increase of 28 per cent. As per reports, net profit of Yes Bank for entire 2014-15 fiscal increased to Rs. 2,005 crore from 2013-14’s Rs. 1,618 crore, an increase of 24 per cent. The Board of Directors has decided to give Rs 9 per equity share as dividend and also raise funds to the tune of $1 Billion through issuance of equity capital in one or multiple tranches. Capital Raising Committee will decide whether the fund will be raised through American Depository Receipts (ADRs)/Global Depository Receipts (GDRs), Qualified Institutions Placement (QIP), or other appropriate modes.

Sportspersons to be honoured at Calcutta Sports Journalists' Club Annual Awards

Calcutta Sports Journalists' Club will give awards to sportspersons for their notable contribution to sports at Kolkata’s Rotary Sadan on 23 April. While Lifetime Achievement Awards will be conferred to Aparna Ghosh and Gurbux Singh for their long years of contribution to Basketball and Hockey respectively, Saurav Ghosal will be given Best Sportsperson of the Country award for winning team gold medal and silver medal in singles competition of squash during 2014 Incheon Asian Games. Other players who will be given awards during the ceremony are Doyel Dey (cue sport), Atanu Das, Chandan Bauri and Swapna Burman (athletics), Wriddhiman Saha (cricket), Rajdeep Sarkar (chess), Jose Barreto (football), and others.

Government to Spend Rs. 400 crore on Monsoon Mission Project

The Indian government will spend Rs. 400 crore on a project named “Monsoon Mission” that is expected to understand the nature of monsoon in India. As Indian agriculture is predominantly dependent on the vagaries of nature, outcome of this ambitious project, in which scientists from all over the world are participating, is expected to help farmers to time their crops better with correct monsoon prediction. Government sources say that with success in the “Monsoon Mission” project, Indian Meteorological Department will be able to create a new climate forecast model that will help them make first long-range forecast, especially monsoon that is a global ocean-atmospheric phenomenon.  

PAN to be Issued within 48 Hours of Application

Permanent Account Number (PAN) will be issued within 48 hours of application. As per reports, the tax department is all set to launch an online facility that will help in the PAN issuance process. Recently, apex policy-making body of income tax department, Central Board of Direct Taxes, notified that Aadhaar card and EPIC (Elector's Photo Identity Card) will be considered valid proof for issuing PAN card. PAN is made mandatory, as per Finance Act 2015 proposal, for buying jewellery worth Rs one lakh or more. Tax department is emphasising on making PAN mandatory for scrutinizing tax return filing more closely.

PM Narendra Modi Vouches for "Political Intervention"

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while addressing bureaucrats at Civil Services Day function on 21 April, said that one of the specialties of democracy is the close connection between “bureaucracy and political intervention”. However, he quickly added that “political intervention” and “political interference” are not the same. The former is a necessity and is an inevitable aspect of democracy and the latter destroys the basic notion of democracy. While stressing on the fact that political interference should be avoided, he made it clear that political intervention is a necessity as “legislators are elected by people”. PM also said that good governance can be delivered by providing “Accountability, Responsibility and Transparency”.

Indian Community Associations in China Arranging a Grand Programme Similar to Modi's Madison Square Success

After Chinese President Xi Jinping finalised a $46 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor through the controversial Pakistan Occupied Kashmir, Indian Community Associations in China invited its members to attend a public meeting in Shanghai on 16 May that will be addressed by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Sources say that most of the 45,000 Indian professionals working in China may attend the meet, which is expected to repeat Modi’s successful New York’s Madison Square address. Chinese officials have said that they are making all arrangements to give Indian PM a warm welcome, reciprocating India’s warm welcome given to Xi by Modi during the former’s India visit.

Arvind Kejriwal doesn't Want the Media Near Him during AAP's Protest Rally against Modi's Land Bill

Chief Minister of Delhi and Aam Aadmi Party’s National Convener Arvind Kejriwal has reportedly asked Delhi Police not allow media to come close to him while he leads a protest today at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar against central government’s Land acquisition Amendment Bill. After Joint Secretary to the Delhi CM flashed a message on wireless yesterday, the police control room has accordingly alerted the district police headquarters on the notice. Sources say that this request has been made by Arvind Kejriwal to avoid tough media questions in the wake of AAP rebellion and ousting of top founder leaders of AAP including Yogendra Yadav and Prashant Bhushan.  

Arun Jaitley to Hold Second Round of Discussion with IT Officials

Arun Jaitley, Union Finance Minister, is all set to hold another round of meeting with the tax officials to simplify the procedure and take a final call on new IT Return tax forms, media reports said. Jaitley already had a first round of meeting with the tax department officials, just after returning from Washington recently, on the issue of new forms of Income Tax Return. IT Return forms, issued by Central Board of Direct Taxes, faced criticism as it allegedly sought too many detailed information (foreign trips and bank accounts), making it cumbersome. IT department put a hold on issuing new ITR forms after Jaitley called up Revenue Secretary Shaktikanta Das from Washington and asked him not to proceed on the same.
