Two policemen die after militants open fire in Srinagar

Militants gunned down two policemen in the busy Hari Singh high street in Srinagar and this incident happens just three days prior to PM’s visit to the state.

Silencer pistols were used to carry out attacks almost at the same time in the areas at Sarai Bala and Jehangir Chowk causing injury to Head Constable Mohammed Maqbool, who died when he was being taken to the hospital, and Nazir Ahmed, another constable who died at the hospital.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is scheduled for arrival here on June 25 to inaugurate train services from Banihal and Qazigund.

Rains may descend on Monday, army launches massive operation

The army is in full force while rescuing people from Uttarakhand as the next 48 hours are critical to them. As per predictions, rains may occur again from Monday.

The people who had been stranded between the stretch of Guptakashi and Kedarnath have been evacuated yesterday. The army launched massive operations never seen before for human rescue in the country and 50,000 people have been rescued till date through it.

The army was able to make contact with 1,000 people stranded at Gaurikund. ITBP has given statement that the next 24 hours in the rescue operation are very critical. Rescue operation was also started at Junglechetti in the remote area of Kedarnath where 1,000 people were stranded. A temporary helipad has been constructed here.

Everyone in the Badrinath region is out of danger, said officials. The mobile networks and ATMs were working there and still 6,000 people were in that area so two more days will be needed for their evacuation. Till the reports last came in, 18,000 people were taken to safer places from places like Joshimath, Badrinath, Kedarnath among others.

The magnitude of the destruction can be gauged from the fact that 400 km of roads have been damaged and would need 3 years for repair. The cloud burst is said to have affected 40,000 sq km of the area in Uttarakhand.

Gold prices increase after two weeks low

Stable global condition led to brisk buying of gold and the effect, gold prices got a breather after slumping for two weeks and spiked up by Rs. 260 to stand at Rs. 27,640 per 10 grams.

Silver prices also rose by Rs. 600 to Rs. 42,300 per kg. This was boosted by industrial buying as well as by coin makers.

The gold prices have dipped when there were cues that central banks may stop stimulus spending. Gold of purity of 99.9% purity to Rs 27640 per 10 grams and 99.5% purity to Rs. 27,440 per 10 grams. Silver coins were in demand at Rs 78,000 for buying and Rs 79,000 for selling of 100 pieces.

Match between Anand and Mamedyarov ends in a draw

Viswanathan Anand had a comfortable draw with Azerbaijan’s Shakhriyar Mamedyarov in the 7th round of Taj Memorial Chess Tournament.

This ended the phase of the world champion’s two straight losses. He had earlier lost to Magnus Carlsen of Norway in 5th and Hikaru Nakamura of America in 6th round. Anand, in the 7th round, as black didn’t give any scope and easily won the game.

Anand used the Slav defense which has been delivering good results to him for years. Mamedyarov used the classic line that lets white have a pawn advantage but with the way Anand played, that did not hold good at all. The players went on till 40 moves and then decided to declare peace.

Priyanka's second single leaked

That is what happened when “Exotic” , the second single of Priyanka Chopra’s album In My City, leaked online. She said everyone expected her to be angry but she was actually pleased with the development.

In this single, she has paired with the famous rapper Pitbull. She asked her fans to wait for the release of the song which would be soon. Her first single "In My City", which was released in 2012, sold as many as 1,30,000 copies.

Bug leads to improper sharing of details of 6 million Facebook users

Contact details like the email ids and phone numbers of as many as 6 million users on Facebook may have been shared with people who had some connection those users due to a technical glitch.

Facebook stated it was very much sorry for this embarrassment. It also announced that it seemed this bug could not harm the profiles as much as there had been no complaints from those users. Facebook has been informing those users whose account details may have been revealed.

Facebook stated this may have happened when a user opted for the Download Your Information tool to download the archive.
