24 April 2020 Current Events The Popular Ambubachi Mela At Guwahati Cancelled Due to COVID-19

The annual festival of Ambubachi Mela at Guwahati has been called off this year due to Coronavirus which was scheduled to start from June 22. Kabindra Sharma, a senior priest at the temple, said that "tough times call for a tough decision". So this year, the committee has decided not to organize the fair because of the possibility of spreading COVID-19 infection even if the lockdown is eased after May 3. This will be the first time in six centuries that the Mela will not be held. However, the priests of the temple will perform the rituals in-house. As per the Assam tourism officials, the festival witnesses 25 lakh visitors every year around the globe.

Ambubachi Mela is a celebration of menstruation of the presiding Goddess at Guwahati’s Kamakhya Temple. And this ritualistic fair has made menstruation less of a taboo in the northeast as compared to other parts of India. As per the health officials, this ritual helps to promote menstrual hygiene through the use of sanitary pads.
