Uttarakhand Tragedy: Updates

Today arrangements for the mass cremation of the dead started in Uttarakhand. Deodar wood and ghee was sent for the purpose as well as priests. This became necessary as bodies were decomposing and an epidemic could break out if the bodies were not cremated soon.

The Action Taken Report was submitted to the Supreme Court by the Center and the Uttarakhand government where it was specified that rescue and relief operations as well as evacuation will be over in the next 72 hours provided the weather was favourable. Also, it was stated removal of debris was in the priority list. IAF had carried 1189 sorties and 419 sorties were carried by the army.

The footbridge was made ready in Joshimath so that, even if the weather was inclement, at least this route could be used. 127 bodies were discovered at Kedarnath, and the casualty figure stands at 822 as of now. The rescue operation at Kedarnath has been completed.

Weather continued to play truant with rains hampering relief work and landslides in Tehri district resulting in loss of life of a woman and a child. Air rescue operation began when the skies cleared. One IAF  helicopter crashed in Gaurikund, which led 5 IAF officers and 3 civilians dead. The helicopter was going to Guptkashi.

United for fight against terrorism: PM

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh stated the terrorists will not be successful in their mission. He paid homage to the eight soldiers who were killed by the terrorists in Srinagar. The soldiers lost their life while returning from a vacation. While addressing the rally he said that the country will fight against terrorism.

He is here with the Congress President Sonia Gandhi on a two-day visit. Along with them, Ambika Soni and Ghulam Nabi Azad are also there. They reached Kishtwar township in the Chenab valley of Jammu. The ministers met the people representing thousands whose houses were destroyed last month in the high intensity earthquake.

The security has been beefed up for in the state for the high-profile visit.

Ranbir Kapoor with his parents to feature in "Besharam"

Ranbir Kapoor will feature with his parents Neetu Singh and Rishi Kapoor in the upcoming flick, Besharam. The movie, which is a comedy, is to be directed by Abhinav Kashyap.

What the images released reveal is that the movie will have Neetu Singh and Rishi Kapoor portraying the role of police officers while Ranbir essaying the character of a tapori.

Ranbir stated that he had learned a lot from his parents and was quite enjoying the shooting as it seemed like family outing. His parents were last seen together in the movie Love Aaj Kal.

The female lead of the movie is Pallavi Sharda and the movie will release on October 2, 2013.

Tata Docomo slashes rate by 90%

Now Tata Docomo has gone ahead and slashed the 2G and 3G data rates by 90% which will be effective from July 1. This move comes after Vodafone, Idea Cellular and Airtel reduced the rates.

The company hopes this will lead to more data penetration. The rates will be in vogue in all the 19 circles. Revised rates for 2G are:

  • Rs.126 for 2GB download /30 days
  • Rs.149 for 2.5GB download /30 days
  • Rs.249 for 3GB download /60 days

3G rate will be Rs.255 for 2GB download/30 days

Cricketers donate for Uttarakhand Relief

Harbhajan Singh will donate Rs. 10 lakh for the Uttarakhand flood relief. He said he wanted to help whatever little he can and some of the amount will go to the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund while the rest will be given to the Punjab Relief Fund.

Harbhajan was himself stranded for few days in Joshimath along with his family as they were on their way to Hemkunth Sahib when the landslides damaged the roads. He was there in ITBP camp and was finally rescued by the army.

Besides him, Shikhar Dhawan has donated all his awards which he received in the recent Champions Trophy for the relief fund.
