Ordinance to offer relief to the convicted legislators opposed by the parties

Left and the BJP as well as some other parties have expressed their opposition against the ordinance which aims to negate the order of the apex court stating that MPs and MLAs will be disqualified if found convicted in a criminal case. The ordinance was passed when the bill on it could not be passed in the parliament’s monsoon session. BJP leader Yahwant Sinha has specified that the government has taken an unconstitutional step and it could have approached the Supreme Court if it had issues rather than passing the ordinance. Sushma Swaraj, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha has stated that the BJP has opposed this move and has requested the President not to sign it. The ordinance would offer relief to the elected members and would not lead to their disqualification from house, but their perks will be removed. If this gets the nod from the President Pranab Mukherjee, it will need to be passed by the parliament during the winter session.
