Uttarakhand tragedy: 20 dead in chopper crash, rescue operation on, fear of epidemic breakout

The Army continued its relief and rescue operation in spite of the inclement weather and a greater risk to its soldiers. 281 people used the land route that is through the Burma bridge which was constructed over Alaknanda on Joshimath – Badrinath road. Heli Bridge was also constructed by the army today apart from the footbridge. 800 people are said to have reached to Joshimath, 450 utilizing the Heli Bridge. 402 people were evacuated from Uttarkashi through helicopters and 683 came by foot.

At Harsil, there are still 1400 stranded and at Badrinath the number is 5000. Yesterday’s chopper crash left twenty people dead, among which were 5 IAF, 9 NDRF and 6 ITBP personnel. 3,600 people were rescued on Wednesday. 

There is another risk that is outbreak of epidemic as due to dead bodies all around the area has become fly-infested and as many as 300 villagers are having similar health complications like fever, diarrhea and dysentery. The matter is further compounded as there are no doctors available.

Army launched a website which provides updates of the rescue operation.

Tussle of Poll panel and WB Government continue over Panchayat Polls

The Calcutta High Court has stated it is fed up with the case of the West Bengal Panchayat poll and is happy that it has now passed on to the Supreme Court. The State Election Commission appealed to the apex court and its counsel informed the high court about it.

The state government counsel termed this as a shame and specified that it seemed the SEC was not willing to hold polls in the state. SEC and the state government are in tussle over central forces inclusion for security purposes in the state for holding of the panchayat polls on July 2nd, 6th and 9th. The West Bengal CM, Mamata Banerjee stated with this the poll panel ruined all the efforts of the Calcutta High Court which tried to ensure that the polls happened.

EcoSport in competition with Renault Duster

Just when Renault Duster was winning hearts, Ford gets into the arena with its compact SUV EcoSport at an enviable price Rs 5.59 lakh for its 1.5 litre petrol variant, while the diesel variant comes at Rs 6.89 lakh.

Rs 7.89 lakh is the price tag for a 1-litre petrol model which has an Ecoboost engine while 1.5-litre petrol variant equipped with power shift comes at Rs 8.49 lakh. Renault Duster starts at Rs. 8.04 lakhs. It is agreeable that EcoSport is for four people which makes it less powerful compared to Duster but it wins in terms of its pricing.

Also, it is being said that EcoSport will be easier to maneuver than Duster in choc-o-bloc traffic as it has a lighter clutch operation. Ford is believed to have invested $142 million in its Chennai manufacturing unit, the fifth after Brazil, China, Russia and Thailand as there is increased demand for SUVs in India now.

Sai Praneeth says he can win the Grand Prix

Sai Praneeth who is gradually emerging as one of the country’s promising shuttlers, stated he had it in him to face the best in the game and following the footsteps of Parupalli Kashyap and K. Srikanth can win Grand Prix Gold title.

Praneeth caused upset not once but twice. First, he surprised Indonesia’s Taufik Hidayat who is an Olympic champion and also former world number one. Next, he stunned Hu Yun of Hong Kong, who is  world number six, in Singapore. What is more Praneeth defeated Taufik in his farewell match and that too in Indonesia.

Praneeth gives credit to the rigorous training he had against players like Kashyap which helped him pull through major games with elan. These victories enabled him to jump 16 positions to reach career best 45th rank in the world though he aims for the top 30.

Krrish 3 to release on November 4

Krrish 3 will now release on November 4 instead of Diwali that falls on November 3. The change of date was announced by Rakesh Roshan. This was done as the distributors felt that on Diwali day everyone will be busy with Lakshmi puja. So now, the movie releases next day which is a Monday.

It was also announced that the movie’s trailer will be shown with Chennai Express which releases on August 8. In the movie, the star cast includes Priyanka Chopra, Kangana Ranaut and Vivek Oberoi.

Acer launches tablet, ultrabook and notebook

Acer unveiled a tablet, ultrabook and notebook which are powered with Windows 8 and have touch screens in India. The computer manufacturer from Taiwan aims to account for 12% of the consumer notebooks in next few quarters. As of now, in each quarter, as many as 100,000-120,000 consumer notebooks are shipped.

Among the devices launched is Acer Iconia W3 whose feature includes:

• a 8.1-inch tablet• Intel Atom Z2760 Clover Trail chipset• 2 MP primary and secondary camera• Micro-HDMI and micro-USB ports

The price is fixed at Rs 27,999 for a limited period. Users can also opt for a keyboard to use the tablet as a notebook.

Along with this Aspire R7, a Windows 8 convertible laptop which can be changed into a tablet was also launched.
