Talwars get life imprisonment for Aarushi and domestic help's murder


Rajesh and Nupur Talwar were convicted to life imprisonment by a special CBI court a day after they were held guilty for murdering their daughter and domestic help way back in 2008. Their lawyers have stated they will be appealing in the higher court for this. The couple were shifted to Dasna Jail in Ghaziabad district again after the verdict.Judge Shyam Lal gave the verdict of 5 years of jail term as well for the Talwars destroying the evidence and one more year to Rajesh Talwar for providing false information to investigators. The prosecution had demanded death penalty for the Talwars citing this as the rarest of rare case. This case has been closely followed all these years. The dentist couple has stated that they are innocent. On the other hand the domestic help Hemraj’s lawyer had a scuffle with the lawyers outside the court when he conveyed the news of the verdict and had to take shelter in the court. 

Cyclone Leher now to strike Andhra on Thursday

Andhra Pradesh braces itself for another cyclonic storm Lehar which is expected to make a landfall on Thursday. Right now the cyclone is positioned 1030 km E-SE of Machillipatnam in the state. It will pick up more strength and move in W-NW direction to cross Machillipatnam and Kalingapatnam at a distance of 970 km from Kakinada on Thursday noon. The water may swell 2-3 m and over flood the low-lying regions of Vishakhapatnam, Krishna and West and East Godavari. Moderate rainfall will be experienced from Wednesday in north coastal Andhra Pradesh and south coastal Odisha. The state government has demanded for four helicopters and 15 additional teams of National Disaster Response Force as its contingency plan and the navy,army as well as the Coast Guard have been put on alert.

CBI starts its investigation in the bribery case involving SBI Deputy managing director

CBI has started its investigation in the alleged bribery charge against one of the deputy managing directors of the SBI. The bank has also initiated its probe against Shyamal Acharya who has been directed to go on leave. He is the deputy managing director for the mid-corporate segment and was handling many major accounts that included Kingfisher Airlines. SBI’s two most experienced managing directors —Hemant Contractor and A Krishnakumar will be carrying the internal probe. Incidentally this comes after the RBI deputy governor, KC Chakrabarty specified that the PSU bankers were not fulfilling their responsibilities well. This statement has come when the share of bad loans of the PSU banks increased to 86.1% from 64.5%. CBI has initiated raids at many locations. The case against Acharya is that Worlds Window Group asked for Rs 400 crore loan, Acharya is supposed to have used his position to get the initial Rs 75 crore of loan passed and for that he got Rs 15 lakh as reward. Moreover he was also presented with Rolex and Omega watches which was confiscated from his cabin by the CBI.

YES BANK ties up with Hockey India League

YES BANK has inked a multi-year contract with the Hockey India League (HIL) which will start from 2014 season. Narinder Batra, HIL chairman stated this would be long term collaboration for the League. He said this would bring in positivity in the game as the association with the bank will bring in innovations. Last year HIL had collaborated with Hero industries and it was a wonderful start this was also informed. Now the collaboration with YES BANK will be beneficial both for the League as well as for the fans around the world. On the other hand Rana Kapoor, the managing director & CEO of YES BANK said the bank will be doing all for the growth of the sport which has maximum participation in India. The bank’s Sports Banking proposal will offer a strong financial infrastructure setup which will provide customized banking solutions to players, associations and teams.

No tickets required for International Film Festival of India

Movie lovers won’t have to buy tickets for the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in the next edition. This was informed by Vishnu Wagh, who is the chairman of the Entertainment Society of Goa (ESG). ESG is one of the organizers of the festival. He stated that they have come to this decision as tickets are blocked by the delegates at the film festival but screenings are not attended. Now the visitors will have to stand in queue and wait outside the screening hall and they will get entry on a first-come-first-served basis. For 10000 delegates there are only 2000 seats and blocking of tickets add to the chaos as this is one of the biggest international film festivals which is held in Goa every year in the last week of November.

Google to bring in enhanced camera API for the Android phones

Google is going to add more features to the new camera API for its Android phones which will now feature RAW image output and burst mode among other features. This is now there in the hardware abstraction layer or HAL which connects with the smartphone’s hardware. RAW image would enable more editing possibilities than the default JPEG format which the Android devices store. There would be other features like face detection though these are already there in high end phones like that of Samsung, Sony and HTC. The image quality will also be revamped. The main determinant of course will be the device’s hardware whether it can support these features or not.
