27 March 2013 Current Events India is committed to supporting Africa: Manmohan Singh

PM Manmohan Singh said India remained committed to support Africa’s rise and would continue to assist and work with them to develop their institutions and build infrastructure. "India's relations with Africa are rooted in history of our solidarity against colonialism and apartheid," said the PM at the Africa Dialogue Forum at the BRICS Summit. “Our engagement with Africa has come a long way since then and today we have built a new template for partnership in the form of the India-Africa Forum Summit. This partnership is guided by the vision and priorities of our African partners” said the prime minister.




Tamil Nadu for referendum in Sri Lanka

Tamil Nadu CM J. Jayalalithaa introduced a resolution in the assembly calling for a referendum to carve out a Tamil Eelam state in Sri Lanka. Pushing the resolution in the house, the CM said Tamils living in Sri Lanka and Tamils of Sri Lankan origin living in other countries must take part in the referendum. The CM said that “India should stop calling Sri Lanka a friendly nation”. She further said that “There should be an international probe on the war crimes during the war (against the Tamil Tigers) and people responsible for that should be tried before an international court”. The resolution urged the Indian Govt to impose economic sanctions on the island nation until the oppression on Tamils there was stopped.




Cashless treatment for accident victims on Gurgaon-Jaipur highway

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and insurance provider ICICI Lombard will offer cashless treatment to accident victims on the Gurgaon-Jaipur highway. The ministry has signed a MoU with the insurance company and this will be a pilot project. The idea is that no one should be deprived of immediate treatment for want of money for paying hospital bills. The panel of hospitals will include government and private hospitals said a statement. The pilot project is being launched to gather data and experience for rolling out a pan-India scheme aimed at providing immediate medical attention to accident victims, said the officials. The ministry will enroll a large number of volunteers on the stretch of NH 8. They will be trained to act as first responders. The Govt of Haryana and Rajasthan will be closely associated with the project.




Google Play Movies now available in India

After introducing Books, Google extended its movie rentals and purchase service “Google Play Movies” to the Indian market. A Google Play support document mentioned this development. Both Hindi and English films are available on the Store along with some HD titles as well. One can rent movies for as low as Rs.50 and buy them for a minimum of Rs.190. The movies section is made live on the web version of Google Play as well as on the mobile version. Users can install the Play Movies app on their Android device to download, watch and manage movies they've purchased or rented. Movies can be streamed over Wifi or 3G via the Google Play store on the device or on a computer by visiting play.google.com/movies. Users can also download movies to their Android device for offline viewing via the App.




Saina Nehwal nominated for BWF Female Player of the Year award

India’s Saina Nehwal was nominated for the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Female Player of the Year award for 2012. World No.1 Li Xuerui of China is also nominated for the award. If they both win, they will have to share the annual award. In 2012, Saina won the Indonesia Open Super Series Premier, Denmark Open Super Series Premier, Swiss Open Grand Prix Gold, and the Thailand Open Grand Prix Gold to add to the bronze medal she won at the London Olympics. The winners’ announcement and award presentation will take place on May 18 following the BWF Annual General Meeting.




First look poster of 'Raanjhna' on Holi

The first look poster of Dhanush-starrer Hindi romance "Raanjhnaa" was released today. The film features Sonam Kapoor, Abhay Deol, Swara Bhaskar, Deepak Dobriyal and Mohammed Zeeshan. It is directed by Anand Rai and produced by Eros International. The film is currently in post-production and is scheduled to release June 28. Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman has composed its music.
