Number of birds arriving at Chilka declines

The number of birds that come to Chilka Lake has reduced significantly this year and the decline is from 77,609 to 59,687.

The lake sprawls over 1,100 sq. km. and there is decline in tidal water which affected the salinity of the lake. Experts feel this may be the reason for the dip in bird population. Further in the northern zone of the lake weed growth also acted as one of the deterrents.

The birds which flocked here were lesser whistling duck, black tailed godwit, and little cormorant along with greater flamingos, grey pelicans and northern shovelers which turned up despite the unbearable heat.
