The controversial triple talaq bill was passed in the Lok Sabha amid protests yesterday. The demand to organize a joint select committee for the bill had been made by the opposition. However, it was rejected by the government, following which a walkout was staged.
The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill 2018 had the support of 245 votes, against 11 in opposition. Now, the bill will have to be approved by the Rajya Sabha, where the BJP doesn't have high numbers.
According to the police, Prashant Nat, a taxi driver, has confessed that he shot inspector Subodh Singh in the violence after cow carcasses were found in Bulandshahr.
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed for the case, arrested Nat at a place near Noida. While 6 arrests have been made in the probe, three main accused still remain on the run. The police have said that Nat's arrest has been made based on the surveillance footage, as well as, accounts of the eyewitnesses.
