109 years old Gorton Castle in Shimla catches fire, no loss of life


The 109 years old Gorton Castle in Shimla was engulfed in a major fire today. The building is four storied and houses the Audit and Accountant General of Himachal Pradesh. Fire broke out in the top two floors. No casualty was reported. The fire has been controlled but why it occurred is yet to be found out. Army fire tenders were also pressed in service along with the other fire tenders. The fire burnt all the records which were stored in more than 60 rooms of the top two floors of the building. The disorderly parking of the vehicles within the complex led to more hardship for the fire tenders to reach the spot. The incident came to the knowledge of the Principal Accountant General Satish Loomba at 4.45 a.m. The fire was said to have occurred at midnight. The building which was constructed with stone and timber was completed in May 1904. After hundred years in 2004 it was renovated at the cost of Rs 1 crore.

Supreme Court rejects petition for review of its verdict on homosexuality


The Supreme Court bench of Justices H L Dattu and S J Mukhopadhaya has rejected the petitions to relook into its verdict passed in December 2013 which criminalized gay sex in India and made it a punishable offence which can entail to maximum of life imprisonment. The apex court has set aside the Delhi High Court’s decision to decriminalize gay sex and had left it to Parliament for amendment of the law. The petitions were filed by the Centre and gay rights activists that included an NGO Naz Foundation. It was specified in the petition that people expressed their preferences in four years openly after the high court decriminalized gay sex and now at the same time they face penal actions for the preferences. It was also stated that criminalizing this entails to violation of fundamental rights of the LGBT community. Naz Foundation has specified that there were host of glaring error of law as well as incorrect application in the verdict.

Notice to Kejriwal and Bharti by Delhi HC acting on plea of BJP leaders


A notice was sent by the Delhi HC on Tuesday to Arvind Kejriwal, the Delhi CM and Somnath Bharti, the Law Minister acting on the petition which seeks to cancel their election in the event of them surpassing the limit of the expenditure in the assembly polls in December. The court has directed them to respond by February 25. The petition was filed by BJP’s Vijender Gupta and Arti Mehra who have charged that Arvind Kejriwal and Somnath Bharti’s expenditure was beyond Rs.14 lakh. The notices were issued by Justice Vipin Sanghi to Kejriwal on Vijendar Gupta's petition, while Justice G.S. Sistani acted on Arti Mehra’s plea and sent notice to Bharti. The allegations are that AAP leaders’ expenditure crossed Rs.17 lakh in the polls so their election should be declared null and void. They have also contended that following the norms of the Election Commission, only Rs 14 lakhs can be spent by any candidate on an assembly election. It was also stated that as many as Rs 94 lakh was spent in the campaign by hosting a rock concert named "Jeet Ki Gunj, Vote for Change"on November 23, 2013 at Jantar Mantar after the nomination papers were filed. As per the plea, votes were mobilized through this which changed the results of the election.

In a surprise move RBI hikes key policy rates


In a move which is sure to dampen the moods of the market, RBI increased the key policy interest rates by 0.25% to discipline inflation. This can affect the loan sector like that of home, automobile and various others increasing the EMI for the same and can also cause have an impact on the industrial growth. The repo rate, which is the rate at which the banks borrow funds from the RBI was spiked to 8% from 7.75% per annum. The reverse repo rate which is the rate at which the RBI pays to the banks when they keep the surplus short-term funds with the RBI has been modified to 7%. The RBI also increased the marginal standing facility rate by 0.25% and it stands at 9%. CRR or the cash reserve ratio is though static at 4%. These are the determining factors for lending and borrowing practices of commercial banks and would thus affect the EMIs on automobile, home and different other loans. This move of RBI has surprised experts as inflation had eased up. In December it went down to lowest in five months that is 6.16% whereas it touched highest in 14 months that is 7.52% in November.

India lose series 0-3 against New Zealand


New Zealand defeated India by 7 wickets in the 4th ODI. With this win, New Zealand take a 3-0 lead in the 5 match ODI series at Seddon Park. In the New Zealand innings Ross Taylor made 112 not out and skipper Brendon McCullum made 49 not out which cruised New Zealand to take over India. The third match ended in a tie. India compiled a competitive target 278 for 5 in 50 overs. Dhoni scored 79 runs off 73 balls, Ravindra Jadeja made 62 not out from 54 balls whereas opener Rohit Sharma compiled 79 off 94. India was in a must win situation in this match. Dhoni has put the blame on the pacers of the team for the dejecting 0-3 series loss against New Zealand. He stated this wicket was not for bowling short and wide balls which the bowlers did. For India this is the second series defeat in a row after the loss in South Africa.

Twitter brings in added features in Android app


Twitter has upgraded its Android app and it has now enhanced photo editing and sharing tools. Twitter will now enable the users to mention others using @ sign within the tweets and thus tag them while uploading an image. Users will also be given added features when clicking on an uploaded snap to edit them. The images can be cropped, rotated before upload. These features seem to be aimed at competing with Instagram. Twitter had collaborated with photo editing app Aviary which made adding filter or auto-correction easy. Now with the recent update users can be tagged with a click and there is no need to type in the name. Twitter will also bring in the recommended tweets, topics which are trending when one scrolls and the timeline is refreshed though they will show up if only there are no tweets to load. This feature though will be available to the users in the US.
