India and Japan up for closer ties?

There are number of developments taking shape between India and Japan, the first one being that Japan has decided to ease the ban on defence goods export which implies India can now acquire ShinMaywa US-2, or the flying boat, a huge amphibious aircraft.

The two countries will also regularize the bilateral naval exercises and see to it that they are held more often but this exercise will not involve other countries. Japan has also given indication India and Japan can get into civil nuclear cooperation in two years but this would be a cautious effort considering the fact that both countries have their stance on the Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT) and the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT).

The increased dialogue between Japan and India is being perceived as a strategic step to keep China at bay though Japan did not give much importance to the China factor.

The thing to note is that the Prime Minister’s visit to Japan happens in a week after the Chinese Premier Li Keqiang came to India.

Srinivasan should step aside: Rajeev Shukla

The pressure is mounting over N. Srinivasan to step down amidst a statement from IPL Chairman Rajeev Shukla who stated that Srinivasan should “stay away” as long as the investigations regarding his son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan are not over.

In fact, Arun Jaitley, who is also a member of Indian Premier League (IPL) Governing Council, is said to have had a discussion with Shukla after which the statement was passed. Earlier, Jyotiraditya Scindia who is the Chiarman of BCCI’s Finance Committed, also voiced his opinion that Srinivasan must step down as the issue involved one of his family members.

With this Srinivasan’s claim that he has not been asked by any of the board members of the BCCI to resign is severely affected. He has been saying all this while that he would not step down as he has not done any wrong. There were more voices heard for his resignation which included that of Union Sports Minister Jitendra Singh. But Srinivasan seems to have got an unusual supporter in Laloo Prasad Yadav who thinks he does not need to resign. It seems a lot of happenings will unfold in a short period of time.
