30 October 2019 Current Events Government to Monitor Whatsapp Messages to Curb Down Mob Violence

Government is to mandate the monitoring the free messaging app 'Whatsapp' which has startled users and intermediaries. A set of rules will be published by 2020 by the information technology ministry for the intermediaries. It is believed that the step has been taken by the government in order to curb fake news that has caused mob violence and has led to several death. In one example, last year i.e. 2018, a man employed by the government was sent round to the villages with a loudspeaker to tell locals not to spread fake news was killed in mob violence. As per the reports, there are more than 50 documented cases of mob lynching due to spreading misinformation on platforms such as facebook, twitter, whatsapp to name a few. Hence, government now wants to use "automated tools to monitor messages" as China does, in order to take down specific messages.
