31 December 2018 Current Events PM Modi renames three Andaman & Nicobar islands

Visiting the islands on Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced several new initiatives for Andaman & Nicobar. The name changes that were being talked about for quite some time, were also put in place. The islands are among the most-visited ones- Ross Island (now to be called Netaji Subhas Chandra Boss Dweep), Havelock Island (now Swaraj Dweep), and Neil Island (now Shaheed Dweep).

Foundation stone for a fast-based power plant was also laid down, to be built with a budget of Rs 388 crore. The central government is envisaging 24*7 electricity on the islands.


Sudhir Bhargava appointed as new Chief Information Commissioner

A total of five new commissioners have been appointed in the Central Information Commission (CIC). Of these, Sudhir Bhargava will now serve as the Chief Information Commissioner. Bhargava's current position in the commission is that of Information Commissioner.

The CIC has been working with a strength of 3 Information Commissioners, while the sanctioned number is 11, including the Chief Information Commissioner.
