31 January 2016 Current Events PM Modi talks about Gandhi, Start-ups, Khadi, Crop Insurance & More on "Mann ki Baat"

Prime Minister Narendra Modi started his 16th edition of “Mann ki Baat” by asking Indians to observe martyrdom day of Mahatma Gandhi on January 30 at 11am. He stressed on importance of “Khadi” and the potential it has in creating employment (undertaken initiatives will create jobs of 18 lakh man days).  PM Modi said that start-ups are not limited to IT anymore. Modi said opting for crop insurance will safe-guard distressed farmers. He stressed upon cleanliness and vouched for enhanced coordination between military powers.


Specific Relief Act, 1963 to be reviewed by Law Ministry to make India Business Friendly

Union government has started reviewing Specific Relief Act, 1963, a 50 year old law that deals with specific fulfillment of a contract. This move by the Law ministry comes within days after establishment of commercial courts and amendment of arbitration law to dispose business disputes faster. Law Ministry’s Legislative Department has set up a committee in reviewing the concerned Act, keeping into consideration the present scenario that involves high investment public projects, contract based infrastructure, PPP projects, and others.


Indo-French Joint Exploration of Mars, Venus on Cards

Chief of French space agency (Centre national d'études spatiales - CNES), Jean-Yves Le Gall, said that after India successfully put their Mars Orbiter Mission – Mangalyaan – on orbit, France is willing to support India’s next mission for exploring Mars as the former has knowledgeable scientists for Mars and Venus. He said India’s MOM mission showed how smart work can help in manufacturing low cost space missions and went on to call it a good example of Make in India's low cost manufacturing.


Kidambi Srikanth enters final of $120,000 Syed Modi International Badminton Championship

Ace Indian shuttler, Kidambi Srikanth, defeated Boonsak Ponsana (11th seed) of Thailand in straight sets 21-14, 21-7 to enter finals of $120,000 Syed Modi International Badminton Championship. Srikanth took 32 minutes to defeat the Thai shuttler at men’s singles semi final match, played at Babu Banarasi Das Indoor Stadium. In the final, he will play against China’s Huang Yuxiang. In men’s doubles match, Akshay Dewalkar-Pranaav Jerry Chopra defeated Korea’s Kim Gi Jung-Kim Sa Rang 25-23, 13-21, 21-17 to enter final.


Microsoft India revises Maternity Leave Policy from 90 days to 180 Days

For uplifting emotional quotient of the employees and at the same time boost healthy work environment, Microsoft India has revised its maternity leave policy for its women employees. They have not only increased maternity leave period from 3 months to 6 months, they have also announced arranging flexible work environment for them for up to 2 years. Paternity leave of 2 weeks will also be implemented. These policies will be effective from February 1, 2016.


Kolkata Court awards Death Sentence to 3 Accused in horrendous 2013 Kamduni Gangrape-Murder Case

Out of 6 convicts found guilty in 2013 Kamduni Gangrape-murder case, additional sessions judge Sanchita Sarkar awarded death sentence to 3 accused (Ansar Ali, Amin Ali, and Saiful Ali) on charges of gangrape, criminal conspiracy, murder, and injury inflicted to cause death to a woman. 3 other accused (Bhola Naskar, Aminur Islam, and Emanul Islam) were sentenced life imprisonment. Other 2 accused (Nur Ali and Rafiqul Islam) were acquitted by court due to lack of evidence. Another accused - Gopal Naskar – died during trial.
