22 January 2016 Current Events Mumbai Central receives Google's Wi-Fi connectivity

From today, passengers using the Mumbai Central railway station would be able to access high-speed internet/Google’s Wi-Fi service. Considered as Google’s biggest project in India, the internet service is a part of Google’s tie-up with state-owned RailTel Corp of India to provide Wi-Fi connectivity at 407 stations. Google CEO Sundar Pichai, during his visit to India in December, had promised to cover 100 railway stations by the end of 2016.


Samsung Gear VR & Gear S2 now in India

Samsung launched the consumer version of its Gear VR headset in India today. Priced at Rs. 8,200, the headset can be purchased from any Samsung retail store across the country. Only Flipkart has the rights to sell the headgear online. Also, you can now purchase the Samsung Gear S2 smartwatch which is available in two variants viz: Classic which is priced at Rs. 24,300 and Sports which is priced at Rs. 25,800.

Apple eyeing to open retail stores in India soon

Today, Apple filed an application with the Indian government asking for permission to open its first retail store in the country. With stores in China, Japan and Hong Kong, the Cupertino-based technology company has sought permission both for single brand retailing as well as selling its products online. Apple already has its iPhones available in India via a wide network of small “Apple-designed” outlets and various third-party retailers like Vodafone and Airtel.

Vodafone 4G to arrive in Haryana, UP East this April

Already launched in December in Kochi, Vodafone India is looking to deploy 4G networks in Haryana and Uttar Pradesh (East) in April, immediately after it is done with the launch in the five service areas by March. With the Kolkata launch scheduled for 25 January 2016, Vodafone India is offering 1GB of free 4G data on pre-booking its 4G SIMs in Kolkata, bookings for which have already started from 12 January.

IRNSS-1E successfully launched from Sriharikota

Today at 9:30 a.m., India successfully launched its fifth navigation satellite in space. Named as IRNSS-1E, the satellite is on board PSLV-C31 rocket and has been launched from Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh. As the fifth navigation satellite in the IRNSS space system, the IRNSS-1E includes seven satellites which are at par with the American Global Positioning System (GPS). The launch has brought India a step closer to an operational ‘desi-GPS’.

ISRO Navigation Satellite to be launched on Jan 20

The Indian Space Research Organisation has announced the launch of India’s fifth Indian Regional Navigation Satellite IRNSS-1E on 20 January 2016 at 9:31 a.m. The 48-hour countdown for the launch of rocket Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle(PSLV-31) carrying the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System IRNSS-1E has already begun in the Sriharikota rocket port located in Andhra Pradesh and would be put into orbit the 1,425 Kg IRNSS-1E satellite.

ISRO sends Proposal to Union Government for carrying out Robotic Mission to Space

Director of Thiruvananthapuram’s Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), S Somanath, has said that human flight mission to space may not reap tangible benefits currently and instead vouched for sending robotic mission into space. He went on to say that a manned space mission will cost Rs. 40,000 crore but questioned justification of spending so much money by the country at present. A proposal of sending unmanned robotic mission to space has been sent to the Union Government for approval.

Maximum "Brain Drain" of Scientists and Engineers in US from India

Available statistics from National Center for Science and Engineering of National Science Foundation shows that majority (32.09 per cent) of scientists and engineers from Asia heading to the US belong to India. Some of the most important reasons of such brain drain in India are earmarked to be lower earnings, lack of research support, and India’s infamous redtapism. The report points out that from 2003 to 2013 there has been an 85 per cent increase in brain drain from India.

Reliance Jio's first 4G smartphone to arrive soon

Named as Lyf Earth 1, Reliance Jio’s first 4G smartphone is expected to be launched commercially in late March or April 2016. Reliance Jio is currently available for 1 lakh Reliance employees across India and over the next few months would be put through beta testing for checking the effectiveness of its coverage. Lyf Earth would run Android 5.1.1 Lollipop and support dual-SIM feature along with a 5.5-inch Amoled display with a full HD resolution.

Moto G price slashed by 17%, now available at Rs. 9,999

Motorola has slashed the price of its Moto G third generation smartphone by 17% to Rs. 9,999. Initially launched in July 2015, the Moto G handset with 8GB memory and 1GB RAM was available at Rs. 11,999 and the one with 16GB memory and 2GB RAM could be purchased at a price of Rs, 12,999 in India. Additionally, the Moto G (3rd Gen) is now equipped with exciting exchange offers priced up to Rs. 4,000.  

Moto E & Moto G are here to stay, confirms Motorola

Speculations about Motorola bidding adieu to Moto E and Moto G have come to a halt with the company confirming the stay of the two super cool smartphones. Motorola, the Lenovo-owned company, has falsified the remarks of Chen Xudong (Lenovo’s head of mobile) wherein he had stressed Motorola and Lenovo were aiming to streamline the overall product portfolio and wanted to put greater focus on two product sub-brands viz: Moto and Vibe.

MG Road, Vijayawada gets Reliance Jio Wi-Fi

On Sunday, Reliance Industries’ subsidiary Reliance Jio Infocomm rolled its high-speed Wi-Fi services called Jionet for consumers residing in MG Road in Vijayawada. Launched by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, Reliance Jio comes equipped with a digital experience and aims to bring cutting edge true 4G technology to people hailing from different business verticals. Reliance Jio 4G claims to deliver 10 times higher download speeds and 4 times better upload speed compared to other internet service providers.

IT youths make free Wi-Fi available in 3 Bhopal villages

The three villages of Bavadikeda Jagir, Shivnathpura and Devria in Bhopal are enjoying the benefits of free Wi-Fi, courtesy a master plan by four IT professionals from Madhya Pradesh. The youths have spent nearly Rs 2 lakhs from their own account to provide the facility in the hamlets. The success is for everyone to see as more than 100 mobile users, some youths with laptops and a Bank of India kiosk are using this uninterrupted Wi-Fi connection. 

Bharat Ratna CNR Rao feels PM Modi needs good Scientific Advisors

Noted scientist and winner of Bharat Ratna CNR Rao said in an interview that Prime Minister Narendra Modi needs good scientific advice for transforming his vision to reality. He advised government to start mission-mode projects on availability of better quality seeds and safe drinking water, eradication of illiteracy, eradication of malaria, etc. Rao said that PM Modi must be provided good advice on the priorities of science, whose development can solve most pressing problems of poverty. He also vouched for strategic funding for new energy technologies, combating diseases, and advanced materials. In another media conversation, Nobel Laureate Serge Haroche vouched for promoting basic research under Make in India programme.

Nissan Motor announces plans of bringing Electric, Hybrid Auto Tech to India

With increasing opinion among policy makers about cracking down on vehicular pollution in India, Nissan Motor Company’s India operation’s President Guillaume Sicard at a press meet in Kanchipuram announced that his company is planning to bring environment friendly electricity and hybrid automobile technology. He went on to say that these advanced electric technologies are expensive and that’s why his company is currently in talks with the government for some incentives. He also added that the Union Government “is very proactive on this”. 

Maruti Suzuki Dzire AGS in the markets

Now available with the Auto Gear Shift (AGS) transmission, Maruti Suzuki Dzire is available for sale at a price of Rs 8.39 lakh. Offered only on the top-end ZDi variant of the sub-compact sedan, Maruti Suzuki Dzire AGS is the fourth Maruti Suzuki car after the pre-existing AGS-enabled cars, including WagonR, Alto K10 and Celerio. Powered by the 1.3 litre DDiS diesel engine, Maruti Suzuki DZire AGS would deliver a mileage of 26.59 KM/l.

Lenovo Vibe K4 Note now in India

Today, Lenovo launched the much-awaited successor to the popular K3 Note smartphone in India, the Vibe K4 Note. Available exclusively on Amazon India, the Lenovo Vibe K4 Note has been priced at Rs 11,999 and would have its first flash sale on January 19, 2016. With an in-built storage of 16GB, Lenovo Vibe K4 Note’s memory can be expanded up to 128GB via a MicroSD card.

Samsung Galaxy S7 Plus to get feature heavy

As per the image shared by Sammobile, the Samsung Galaxy S7 variant namely Galaxy S7 Plus would feature a 5.7-inch QHD display along with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor. In addition, this Samsung smartphone would also sport a 12.2 megapixel rear camera sensor that would be of a much larger pixel size as compared to the one that exists in the 16-megapixel camera of Galaxy S6 Edge+ and the Galaxy Note 5.

PM Modi delivered inaugural speech at 103rd Indian Science Congress Today

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today inaugurated the 103rd Indian Science Congress in Mysuru. While delivering his inaugural speech PM Modi asked the scientists and technologists to concentrate on five Es in “their enquiry and engineering” - Energy, Environment, Economy, Equity, and Empathy. PM said that the efficient technological solutions and cost effectiveness will determine economic prosperity. Modi vouched for such kind of energy that leaves lightest carbon footprint. He asked the scientists to come with such kind of energy solutions that keep “sky blue and earth green”. While explaining the need of empathy, PM Modi said that the scientific efforts must be in tune with the indigenous “culture, circumstance and social challenges”. He said that equity of scientific endeavour will be achieved when scientific advancement becomes inclusive in nature and “improves welfare of the weakest”.
