27 March 2016 Current Events UN Report says Investment Commitment in Renewable energy is led by India and China in 2015

UN Environment Programme's report "Global Trends in Renewable Energy Investment 2016" shows developing countries that led in renewable energy investment commitment in 2015 are India and China. Total investment committed by India, China, and Brazil to increase capacity of renewable energy in 2015 was US$ 156 billion, an increase of 19 per cent with respect to 2014. India itself has committed US$ 10.2 billion for renewable energy capacity building, which is an increase of commitment by 22 per cent.


DRDO to showcase "Make in India" Initiatives during Defence Expo 2016

DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation) is all set to showcase its “Make in India” spirit during the 9th edition of Defence Expo 2016 (a biannual event). The concerned Land, Naval and Internal Homeland Security Systems Exhibition will be held in Goa from March 28 to March 31, 2016, and the event will be inaugurated by union Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar. Reports say that the products that will be showcased are AKASH Air Defence System, Wheeled Armoured Platform, Tejas Light Combat Aircraft, Airborne Early Warning and Control System, and many more.

PM Modi and Bangladesh PM inaugurates 3rd Internet Gateway of India

After Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated internet connectivity project between the two countries, Agartala became the 3rd internet gateway of India (after Chennai and Mumbai). Vikas Swarup (spokesperson of External Affairs Ministry) said in a tweet that people of Tripura will now be able to get more reliable net connectivity after Akhaura (in Bangladesh) to Agartala (in India) leasing of international bandwidth for internet. Swarup said 100 MW power transmission project between Bangladesh and India’s Paltana (Tripura) establishes another link between the two countries.

Moto X Play receives Marshmallow update

Moto X Play smartphone users in India can now enjoy the all-new Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow update which is loaded with Google’s monthly security update. Available over-the-air (OTA), the Marshmallow update comes with Unicode 8.0 emoji support and a camera shutter tone switch. The update will consume a memory space of around 388MB and hence the consumers are recommended to download the OS update via a high-speed Wi-Fi connection.

Zika virus vaccine development work high in India

India is among the five countries where the project of developing a vaccine for the Zika virus is underway. According to WHO (World Health Organisation) more than 30 companies are already working on or have actually developed latest diagnostic tests for detecting the mosquito-borne virus. Talking about the development of vaccine, 23 projects are already being worked on by 14 vaccine developers in countries including India, Brazil, France, Austria and the United States of America.  

Maruti Vitara Brezza to roll out from 25 March

After launching Vitara Brezza at the Delhi Auto Expo 2016 on 3 February 2016, Maruti Suzuki is prepared to deliver the compact sports utility vehicle (SUV) from 25 March 2016. Priced at Rs. 6.99 lakh for the base model and Rs. 9.68 lakh for the top model, Vitara Brezza has been booked by over 20,000 SUV lovers with a whopping 70,000 enquiries received for the vehicle.

iPhone SE to arrive in India early April

iPhone maker Apple announced that its latest 4-inch iPhone will be available in India early April. Priced at Rs. 30,000 and above, the new iPhone SE would be launched at the most aggressive pricing for the Indian as well as global markets. iPhone SE’s 16 GB version would be available at a price of Rs. 39,000 and the smartphone is expected to be available in 110 markets by May 2016.

Uber joins hands with BookMyShow

Today, Uber India informed about its API integration with the renowned online entertainment booking portal BookMyShow. That means, users will now be able to reach the movie theater via an Uber can after having booked their tickets using the BookMyShow mobile app. Users will either receive an option to ‘Ride Now’ or the flexibility to set a reminder to book a ride to the movie hall on Uber.

Apple set to open flagship stores in India

Apple is planning to set up a flagship Apple Store in India. This store would be on the lines of the famous outlet already set up on Fifth Avenue in New York. Three senior industry executives have reported that the brokerage firms are on a hunt for prime retail locations in the National Capital Region, Pune, Bengaluru and Mumbai. The iPhone maker is inclined on setting up a majority of Apple Stores of over 2,000- 3,000 sqft in the country.

A S Kiran Kumar says ISRO working on Exciting Missions

While delivering his speech at 24th convocation of Dr MGR Educational and Research Institute in Chennai, ISRO Chairman A S Kiran Kumar said that the Indian space organisation is working on exciting missions such as sun gazing project called Aditya L1 and Chandrayaan 2. He also said that the planning of both GSLV Mark II and GSLV Mark III will be done within this year. Kumar hoped that more capital is used in harnessing young talents for producing better results.

Andhra Pradesh Government launches High Speed but Affordable Broadband Service

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu launched Fiber Grid project’s first phase, as a part of Digital India campaign that strives to provide internet connection to all households. During the event in Visakhapatnam, AP government signed Memorandum of Understanding with Cisco. By April 2016, internet connections at affordable rate will be provided in Vizianagaram, Srikakulam, and Visakhapatnam districts of Andhra Pradesh. 15Mbps broadband connection will be available for offices at Rs. 999 per month and for households Rs. 149 per month.  

Delhi Govt. launches online facility for grant of licenses

Food & supplies minister Imran Hussain has launched the online portal of Weights & Measures department of Delhi for grant and renewable of several licenses. Developed by Delhi e-Governance Society, the portal was launched in presence of secretary, information technology and secretary, food & supplies and legal metrology in addition to Controller (LM) and some other renowned officers of the Department.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 second sale starts at 2:00 p.m. on Amazon

Xiaomi Redmi Note 3, the company’s comeback smartphone in India, goes on its second sale on Amazon India at 2:00 p.m. Without revealing a specific number for the last sale that took place on 9 March, Xiaomi has received mostly positive reviews for its Redme Note 3 smartphone. Available in two versions viz: 2GB RAM+ 16GB space and 3GB RAM+ 32GB storage space, Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 features a 5.5-inch full HD display, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 650 processor and a 4050 mAh battery.

One Plus 2 price slashed in India

Today, OnePlus announced a price cut on its 2015 flagship for the Indian markets with the 16 GB OnePlus 2 smartphone now available at Rs. 20,999 and the 64 GB version available at a price of Rs. 22,999. The Chinese startup has quoted the rising operations as the key reason behind the price drop. Also, the company has hinted the introduction of a new flagship very soon.

Lenovo Vibe K5 Plus now in India

The budget smartphone from Lenovo, Vibe K5 Plus has been launched in India. Available at a price of Rs. 8,499; the smartphone can be exclusively purchased from Flipkart on 23 March, starting from 12:00 p.m. IST. As the successor to the Lenovo A6000 and Lenovo A6000 Plus; Lenovo Vibe K5 Plus has India as its first launch market. Dolby Atmos-enabled stereo speakers and aluminium casing are the two highlights of Lenovo Vibe K5 Plus.

PM Modi urges Judiciary to adopt Technology to Improve Quality of Judgement

While speaking at Patna High Court event, Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked judiciary to use technology more actively for improving "quality of argument and judgement". PM Modi said that new heights have been achieved by Patna High Court in the last 100 years and pointed out that only thing that was not present earlier was technological power. PM Modi hoped judiciary functioning can be improved and "pendency of cases" can be dealt with efficiently through use of technology.

Delhi Govt mulls idea of launching App-based Bus Service

Delhi Government, in an attempt to strengthen public transport service in the national capital, is planning to announce a fleet of app-based bus service. Reports say that the contract carriage buses may well come under app-based bus service's ambit. A senior government official said that these app-based buses will be provided "special permit". Routes of these buses will be prepared shortly and will benefit the office goers.  Passengers will be able to locate the buses that are going towards their destinations.

No X-ray screening of tablets & iPads at airports

In order to offer relief to the flyers, the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security has decided to stop ‘standalone’ X-ray of tablets or iPads that lack detachable batteries. The decision has been conveyed to the CISF and the paramilitary force has been asked to take a call on the issue. Currently, India is among a handful of countries that require the travelers to take out tablets from hand bag, followed by getting them X-rayed separately.

Suzuki Access 125 to hit Indian stores on 15 March

Japanese two-wheeler giant Suzuki is all prepared to launch the 2016 version of its renowned scooter, Access 125 on 15 March 2016. Backed by a refreshed design and some great features, Suzuki Access 125 has already been showcased at the Auto Expo 2016. The new Suzuki scooter comes with a lighter frame, a restyled apron, larger turn indicators and an innovative headlamp.

ISRO set to launch Sixth Navigation Satellite at 4:00 p.m. today

ISRO is all geared up to launch its sixth navigation satellite IRNSS-1F on board trusted workhorse PSLV C32 at 4:00 p.m. today. With the 54-and-half hour countdown already initiated yesterday, the PSLV is progressing normally. Aimed at providing navigation on par with the US-based Global Positioning System, Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle-C32 would be launching the IRNSS-1F from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at the spaceport of Sriharikota, situated about 110 Km from Chennai.
