The Poor State of Nuh’s Historical Sites

JIM'S INDIA TOUR

Nuh is a town 45 km from Gurgaon and also the district headquarter of Mewat district in Haryana. In the olden times it was known for manufacturing salt. The town is sprawled on the foothill of Arravali Range. There are some beautiful sites like the Chui Mal's water tank and the Sheikh Musa's Tomb but they are in a delapidated state. The State government has not taken any steps so far to preserve the monuments.

A boy whom I met wandering on the street near Chui Mal's water tank led me to the location. It was on the outskirts of the town  and the middle of nowhere. I was taken aback by how bare the tank lay without any walls around it. Chui Mal's water tank was covered with green algae and garbage thrown in by the locals. In most places you couldn't see the water. Plastic bottles float on it and formed a carpet above the green algae plants that covered the tank. A group of local boys have already gathered and without adieu they went in to swim. Some of them even climbed up the a chhatri that adored the tank and jumped into the water. The familiarity and the effortlessness suggested that the kids have made the water tank their swimming pool. The site dates back hundreds of years but it has been left uncared for too long, only left to kids and their swimming routines.

The twin minarets on Sheikh Musa's Tomb not far from Chui Mal's Water tank are one of its kind in India. The minarets were raised above a Tomb on the foothills of Arravali Hills. They are called shaking minarets because if one shakes a minaret the person sitting on the other minaret can feel the vibration. The minarets are in a delicate state and could crumble anytime unless proper care is taken.
