Ratan Thiyam has established himself as one of the of the major names in the world of theater. He has won accolades for his works and performed all over the world. The Chorus Repertory Theater, a brainchild of Ratan Thiyam has set the benchmark for performance theater in Manipur and in India. Chorus Repertory Theater was established in the year 1976, by Ratan Thiyam at Imphal. Since then, it has established its name among the finest theater performing groups in the world. Their breakthrough performance came with Chakravyuha in 1984, which was performed more than 100 times in many countries. The Chorus repertory has also produced another masterpiece called Uttarpriyadarshi.

Thiyam completed his studies from National School of Drama in Delhi. He then returned to Manipur to start a project that would take theatre to a new high. He combines values of modern theater with Manipuri traditions and thereby creating a distinct form of art. His visuals are drawn from the rich traditions and culture of his people.

The Chorus Repertory Theater Production has a two-acre campus with a theater, living quarters and offices. The permanent theater was built in 2001 and has a capacity of 200 people. The mini auditorium was designed by Ratan Thiyam himself. Though their plays are drawn from the Ramayan mythology and ancient traditions, the theater building and the quarters are Japanese inspired. The whole set-up was a sweet surprise.

On my visit in December, the campus was under renovation. There were lot of works done around the campus. I met up with a staff member and he politely led me in. He told me that they had temporarily closed down for the year, but would soon began training for the coming year. The beautiful campus is often visited by foreigners who want a taste of the famed performance. The place is located in a peaceful neighbourhood. The architect of the campus, the ambiance and the beautiful garden in the front took my mind to another place.
