Lakkar Bazaar or the wood Bazaar is on a narrow road adjoining the Ridge. The Bazaar road also leads to the Indira Gandhi Medical College and hospital and DAV school. It is popular for wooden decorative items and souvenirs. The items here are comparatively cheaper than in Delhi and other cities. The shops here offer almost everything from decorative items to articles used daily in kitchen. The market came into being after a group of Sikh carpenters came and settled here from Hoshiapur. They continue to churn out charming wooden products from woods such as deodars and walnut, which are commonly found around Shimla.
One of the most sought after products are the highly stylized walking sticks. Every avid hiker or folks who are not used to height and climbing would have to own one of this to reduce the toll of climbing steep steps and winding roads. Most walking sticks start from Rs.100. The Lakkar Bazzar also marks the start of a climb to the Jakhoo peak. One can pick up a light walking stick from here.
