Bogibeel Bridge to be Inaugurated on 25 December 2018 by Narendra Modi

The Bogibeel Bridge is deemed as the longest railroad bridge of the country. It will be inaugurated on Christmas, 25 December, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The bridge has already been lighted on Sunday night. Its completion has been due for long. The foundation stone of the bridge was laid more than 20 years ago in 1997 by the then PM HD Deve Gowda. Later, the construction work began in 2002, after inauguration by the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Interestingly, the inauguration of the now completed bridge coincides with the birthday of the late PM Vajpayee. The bridge will be made open to the public on the same day of its inauguration. People from both Arunachal Pradesh and Assam have been waiting for its completion. Once in operation, the bridge will decrease the travel time between Arunachal Pradesh’s Naharlagun and Tinsukia in Assam by 10 hours by reducing the distance travelled from 500 km to a mere 100 km. The double-decker road and rail bridge, which spans 4.94 km, is completed in a budget of Rs. 5,920 crore.

The construction of the bridge on the Brahmaputra river is also seen as the strengthening of defence of India along the Sino-Indian border.
