Mercedes Benz is gearing up to unveil the new GLB 35 4-Matic, the latest addition to its fast-growing AMG performance-division car line up. The fourth AMG model to get the “35” badging, the car made its public debut at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show. Other recently introduced car models in this category are the A 35 4-Matic hatchback, A 35 4-Matic sedan, and the CLA 35 4-Matic coupe.
The car gets an eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox option including a race start function and multi-plate clutch four-wheel-drive system, which can apportion up to fifty per cent of the drive to the rear axle. Slip, Comfort, Sport, Sport+ and Individual are the five different driving programs that are offered in AMG’s Dynamic Select System.
Additional agility programs offered in the AMG dynamic system come in two modes – Basic and Advanced. These programs affect the handling of the car variably, depending on features like the four-wheel-drive system, stability control sensors and speed-sensitive steering.
Brakes and Stability
The brakes of the GLB 35 have been upgraded to 350 mm discs up front, and in combination with four-piston callipers and at the rear, it has 330 mm discs with single-piston floating callipers.
Even though the Mercedes is yet to release an accurate weight figure for the GLB 35, they have revealed a sprint capability of 0 to 100 kilometres per hour in about 5.2 seconds and an electronically limited top speed around 250 kilometres per hour.
McPherson struts on the front and multi-link rear suspensions are among the various attributes of the vehicle. The standard suspension used by GLB models itself has got multiple updates, including the latest knuckles and transverse control-arms at the front. It also gets a redesigned sub-frame and rear-wheel carriers. Customers get an option to include the AMG Ride Control which has an electronically controlled damping set-up, and the car comes equipped with three levels of firmness – Comfort, Sport, and Sport+.
What’s more?
The newest addition in the AMG line-up is the first two GLB models. An even more upgraded and powerful model, the GLB 45 4-Matic which comes with 422 horsepower and 500 Nm torque in the top of the line S form, is also being developed and will most likely be revealed in 2020.
Mercedes is using the MBUX operating system inside the new AMG models. This Operating system works in collaboration with the infotainment display and the standard digital instruments. Both the digital instruments and the infotainment display are packed within the top section of the GLB 35 4-Matic’s dashboard. The instruments come with three different themes, which are Classic, Sporty, and Supersport. The supersport theme provides AMG specific car data to the system and presents a notch above the standard-issue performance output.
The interior layout of GLB 35 is similar to other GLB models and comes with a five-seater plan of accommodation. Customers can also opt for a seven-seater design, which has a third row of two individual seats with a fore and aft adjustment of the second row.
All the GLB models are produced on the same production line at the Mercedes factory in Aguascalientes, Mexico.
India bound?
There is still no news on the launch of GLB 35 4-Matic’s launch in India, though the standard model is said to arrive in our market around the second half of the year 2020. This model will be competing against the higher-end variants of the X1 and XC40, and the new Q3 as well in the International and Domestic markets.
