Industry blues might’ve been affecting sales of most passenger vehicles, but where automobiles are concerned, nothing hurts the genuinely passionate and prosperous, and luxury car manufacturers often bet on the fact that the ones who can afford to pay, will pay.

Price and availability

That being said lays some groundwork for the latest performance car launch in India – the BMW M5 Competition. Priced at an eye-popping, jaw-dropping Rupees 1.55 crores (ex-showroom), the luxury performance sedan from the German automaker is being brought in as a CBU and is expected to arrive at showrooms shortly.

Exterior

The exterior reflects the distinct styling cues of the iconic Manufacturer, with emboldened lines and contours that convey a compelling purpose – vital to the performance dedicated M badge. A roof made from lightweight, high-quality carbon fibre reinforced plastic provides the greenhouse. And also adds to the safety as well as the sportiness of the sedan. The M-styled set of mirrored kidney grilles give it the signature BMW facia with dynamically shaved off surfaces that give it a focused, gritty look. M styled side air vents come with glossy black lettering and highlights the streamlined fusion of trim and body.

Side skirts also have the option of the same laminated M5 Competition lettering – unclear whether complimentary or not. The rear spoiler and apron come in the same vibrant shade of black, and the end gets M specific tailpipes with beautifully extruded chrome tips – coming from down under – and a black M5 badge on the trunk lid, having the letters “Competition” underneath.

Power and Transmission

Power comes from an eight cylinder V-twin petrol engine with TwinPower turbochargers dishing out six hundred and twenty-five horsepower at six thousand revolutions per minute, at a peak torque of seven hundred and fifty Newton-Metres. The performance punch that the Competition gets over the previous M5 launches it to triple digits in just 3.3 seconds as opposed to the latter’s 3.9 seconds. Transmission is an eight-speed Steptronic unit with Drivelogic technology that provides for super-quick shifts and plenty of options on offer. Gears can be shifted manually both via stick and paddle shifters on either side behind the steering wheel.

The signature M performance exhaust is equipped with a flap concept. An innovation with electrically controlled flaps positioned just before the rear exhaust end canister, minimize the backpressure from the exhaust to increase efficiency, and produce the signature BMW M roar.

The intelligent x-drive drive train in the M5 provides for enhanced traction in the All wheel drive arrangement of the sedan. The driver gets to choose from different combinations of configurations that fine-tune the drive experience to their preferred driving style and travel. De-activating the all-wheel-drive shifts the power transmission to the rear wheels – also known as driving enthusiast’s paradise – where you don’t just turn into curves, you slide in and out of them. Drifting comes easy to the M5 Competition with impressive road control and handling, and for the seasoned driver, it is fun at every curve.

Safety and Stability

Safety begs inflatables, and M5 happily provides with head and side airbags for the front and rear seating arrangements as a manufacturing standard. Other features include the generic ABS, Stability control, and the BMW Dynamic stability control, M Dynamic Mode, and dedicated control systems for Braking, Cornering, and the Active M differential unit.

Interiors

Interiors get sporty seating with a string of features and illuminated M5 logos along with all-black seat belts with the BMW M stripe in its signature colours. M1 and M2 buttons allow the driver distinct drive settings and a red start/stop button to yell motorsports. Pedals and footrests are finished in stainless steel and complete the purpose-driven power and luxury image in the interior as well.

BMW ConnectedDrive technology leads in its class among various manufacturers and can never cease to amaze, especially in a flagship car like the M5. The Competition comes with BMW Gesture Control, BMW Display Key, Wireless charging, BMW Heads-up-display, and Apple Carplay Wireless. The cockpit has the BMW Live software called the Cockpit Professional and runs its latest operating software version 7.0. And comes with 3D navigation, a high-resolution steering cluster with a 12.3″ screen, and 10″ touch screen control. Music is Pleasure through the ears courtesy, a Harman Kardon Surround sound setup with sixteen speakers giving out six hundred watts.

Rearview parking cameras and Parking sensors on the front and rear combine to form the driver and parking assist system, which is necessary on most cars, but as a BMW feature comes with unique bells and whistles.

Consumption and Efficiency

In addition to the power output, fuel consumption figures are impressive due to the Efficient Dynamics features such as the lightweight design, aerodynamics, Energy regeneration systems, ease of functional access, and driving assistance technologies.

Verdict

The Competition is built for Sheer driving pleasure and the power it delivers when combined with the roar from its exhausts, ends up making it an exhilarating experience. At the offer price, it might be uncomfortable to even think of, for most of us, but the rich and passionate, Huh.
