Tata motors have been running operations in full swing for the coming year’s product launches. Just months ahead of their launch, the Tiago and Nexon 2020-facelift models have spied testing around Pune city.

Facelifts are necessary to design upgrades to refresh and extend the market life cycles of existing models. This is an important strategy to satiate the customer need for better options every few years and is a process followed by all automotive manufacturers.

2020 Tiago facelift

The 2020 Tiago gets quite a makeover with a completely new face and other exciting new features. In sync with the new Tata design language called “Impact Design 2.0”, their flagship new hatchback is set to top their sales charts for the fourth successive year in 2020. The recent slowdown in the automobile industry had doubtlessly hurt the sales of the Tiago as well, but the coming year is being looked at with positive expectations. With the onslaught of electric vehicles headed the market’s way, there would be major reshuffles in all vehicle classes. It is a part of Tata’s range of face-lifted vehicles for the coming year and set to be introduced at the 2020 Auto Expo in Greater Noida. The range includes its elder siblings, the Tigor and the Nexon.

The design and styling get a fresh revisit in the facelift, as a more prominent front fascia is the first thing to greet you among the car’s new features. The front grille is bigger and is adorned on either side, by a pair of slim and dynamic projector-headlamps. Fog lamp housings are also fresh, but the lack of LED-Daytime running lights is a little disappointing. The central air inlet has been widened giving it a sporty appearance. Wheels may be the same as its predecessor and so is the body shell, except for a few line-and-surface changes. The rear end appears to be the same, but the front is completely about the said new design philosophy.

The cabin structure is mostly like the previous model and may get the same steering wheel as well. A seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system and an all-digital instrument cluster will be available across all variants. Automatic climate control would only feature in the top models. One can make out the extensive use of high-quality-finish materials on upholstery and trims. The company has tried to upgrade the entire in-car experience on a visual-comfort oriented stimulus.

The new Tiago gets the same 1.2-litre petrol engine capable of 85ps and 114 Nm of torque, with BSVI compliant changes. The diesel engine will possibly be discontinued for this model, as BSVI compliance would cost the company a lot more than it would for the petrol type.

It is likely to compete against the likes of the Hyundai Grand i10 facelift, called the Nios. Expect pricing to be slightly higher for all variants, though offers might also be made available on a new purchase of new models.

2020 Nexon facelift

Like its much smaller sibling, the 2020 Tata Nexon would also sport several fresh new features, visual and functional. It has been among Tata’s top success stories ever since its 2017 launch and is expected to join the line-up of Tata’s fresh offerings in the upcoming Auto Expo.

It gets a blockier front with more edges than curves and follows their new design language. The new grille is flanked on either side by accentuated projector headlamps with cluster-studded LED daytime-running-lights. The fog lamp unit and garnish also get the new design treatment, and the central air inlet is widened, with a more elegant garnish. The tail-lamp may also have been completely redesigned to mimic that of the Harrier but isn’t visible in the spied photographs. Wheel size remains unclear, but the spokes have been restyled for a sportier, more structural appeal.

The overall stance of the car has been retained, but with fresh new features and line changes. Tech and access would have been upgraded and the new Nexon will also get a sunroof – though only for the top variant.

The interior experience is also going to be different with a much larger touchscreen infotainment unit and an all-digital instrument cluster. Interior gadgetry will also include wireless charging in the upcoming Nexon.
Power will come from the existing 1.2 litres turbocharged, revotron petrol engine and the 1.5-litre diesel engines, with a minor- BS-VI compliant change. Both engines can produce over 110 horsepower at 170 and 260 Nm of torque respectively. Gearbox options also remain the same, between a six-speed manual and AMT variants.

The car has been among the top contenders in pushing the envelope of the Indian compact SUV market. However, as is with the market, constant competition is the key to sustainable betterment. With the recent sales figures of the Nexon being challenged by the likes of Hyundai Venue and Mahindra XUV 300, the restyled version needs to do well. Post its launch in the upcoming expo, the 2020 Tata Nexon will most likely be available in showrooms from April next year.
