There is one thing that we Indians love more than almost everything else- entertainment. Both Hollywood and Bollywood have existed since time immemorial. However, in India, one could almost say movies are more of a religion to us than a mere timepass.

We grow with the cinema, we cry and laugh along with it, we live lives. No wonder, then, our movies mean much more to us than 2-3 hours long time packed with entertainment. They are an experience. So, as 2018 comes to an end, and we wait for a new beginning, we bring to you our specially curated list.

The best movies of 2018, in no particular order:

Andhadhun

2018 has been good for the much talented Ayushmann Khurrana. One after the other, he has given blockbusters, be it Andhadhun or the heart-warming, Badhaai Ho.

Andhadhun revolves around the life of Akash (played by Khurrana), a blind pianist who witnesses a crime, and now has to report it. The only problem? He didn’t see it happening.

The movie is one of its kind and marvelously manages to keep you on the seat’s edge throughout the 2 hours and 30 minutes. It’s humorous, it is intense, it is a masterpiece of a mystery- all packed in one. Andhadhun is a perfect proof of how far along our cinema has come. Gone are the days when bland romance would satiate the viewers.

Now, the audience wants to experiment, so do the creators. The movie was well-received by everybody, with many declaring it “the” best 2018 had to offer us.

Sanju

The biopic of Sanjay Dutt, this movie has been in and out of controversies since the beginning. However, that did not stop it from becoming a blockbuster, and a complete entertainment package for many out there, especially Sanju fans.

Dutt’s character has been brought on screen by Ranbir Kapoor, and the actor has once again proven why he’s considered one of Bollywood’s finest. The acting is immaculate, the presentation well-thought of. Kapoor’s transformation is so surreal, that in some scenes of the movie, you actually believe that is Sanjay Dutt himself. The best example is the part from Munna Bhai MBBS.

Whether you like Sanjay Dutt or not, or even this movie, you have to admit that it packed a punch. One of the most talked about movies of 2018, no wonder, it is on this list.

Raazi

As we said, the Indian cinema has taken some huge leaps in the past few years. Otherwise, it wouldn’t have been possible to even imagine a Bollywood spy thriller, right? And, that too, with the gorgeous Alia Bhatt playing the Indian spy.

The movie focuses on the life of Sehmat Khan, who is an undercover RAW agent. As part of an operation, she marries into a Pakistani family just to gather information. Build up enough, already? Well, as the movie progresses, it manages to live up to its genre- “a thriller”.

The movie tugged at the hearts of its viewers, even its music popular among the people. A well-delivered piece by the director, Meghna Gulzar, this one will surely be the center of talks even in 2019.

Badhaai Ho

Time for some light-hearted fun? We have Badhaai Ho for you. Released in mid-October, the movie is still running across multiple theatre screens in the country. And, why not? However “lightly” we take comedy movies, they are a tough nut to crack, especially in today’s era where most of the “funny” movies end up being borderline dull.

Badhaai Ho manages to talk about a core problem within our Indian society, and it does it through giggles. In the movie, Nakul (Ayushmann Khurrana), a 25-year old man, finds out that his mother is pregnant. And, of course, because of how we have been brought up, he feels ashamed and even the society begins ridiculing his parents. It is appreciable how all of that is brought live on the screen without a trace of judgment.

All the actresses and actors have played their part to perfection. And, the best part? It is not filled to the brim with cliche comedy lines, but rather, actual giggle-inducing, wholesome comedy.

Mulk

It is very difficult to portray sensitive matters on screen, without losing essence or even without hurting the communities associated. Often, when a social call is brought on the silver screen, some or the other crucial aspect manages to miss out. That is where Mulk had done beautifully.

The movie shows the rift between the Hindu and Muslim community in India, a rift we often do not realize exists till in the worst of times. It shows the judgments, the assumed stereotypes, and that all too well-known look of suspicion. It manages to capture communal gaps from a very fresh angle, making sure the message gets across.

In the 21st century, be it 2017 or 2018, we need movies like this every once in a while to remind us. Remind us that we can do better, and we must strive to do so.

2018 has been yet another eventful year; for us, as well as, for Bollywood. Many good movies released, and this was our pick from the lot. A tough pick, admittedly. Let us know what you think in the comments below!
